In December 2019 I made a 2020 To Do List with 7 categories and 21 “To Dos.” I’ve posted an update on it every three months, and this is my final update! Note:
- bolded items have been updated with comments this quarter
- bolded ✔ items have been completed this quarter
- italicized ✔ items were completed in check-in #1, check-in #2, and check in #3
- items with a strike through are no longer “to dos”
How did I do overall? You can see my scoring below! I would say I averaged a B. I made all my “Home” and “Reading” goals, most of my “Fitness,” “Work,” and “Relationship” goals, and failed miserably (as expected!) at “Beauty.”
Will I make another list for 2021? Nah, goal-setting doesn’t motivate me. I obviously need to find something to motivate me for those beauty goals and to quit being such a lazy cat mom though!
Relationships – 2/3, B
- ✔ Go on a trip with Steven to someplace new-to-us – completed! I was intending for this to be a trip for just us two, but I’m not sure that will happen this year, so let’s count Atlanta! Updated: in September we went to Cedar Grove, Wisconsin for a long weekend, and explored the surrounding area. Close to home, but someplace new-to-us and just us two!
- Play with the cats more – I am a lazy cat mom and need to continue working on this.
- ✔ Continue to remember everyone has different communication styles and preferences – and I don’t need to understand or agree with them to accept them – completed! I’ve actually done really well with this this year, surprisingly, with help from the pandemic. I’m proud of myself for chilling the eff out.
Home – 3/3, A+
- ✔FINISH THE GARAGE! – completed! It’s virtually complete as of November 11th! Woo hoo! There is still a lot to be done inside – Steven has been working on putting up conduit, installing electrical boxes, and pulling wiring. And down the road we need to insulate it and set up the radiant heating system. But we’re calling it complete!
- ✔ Bring the Datsun home! – completed! We brought it home on October 30th! Yay!
- ✔ Sort through items that have been in storage boxes in basement since we moved in in February 2016 – completed!
Money – 2/3, B
- Continue to put money in to savings – I did okay with this in 2020, but it needs to be a SMART goal with actual numbers attached to it (duh).
- ✔ Spend less at Bath & Body Works and Starbucks – completed! This goal would be more impressive if I had the stats of how much I spent in 2019 vs 2020, and I don’t, but I know it was a lot less. This year, I spent spent $415 at Starbucks ($255 in gift cards, and $160 on myself) and $125 at Bath and Body Works ($80 in gifts, $45 on myself).
- ✔ Find a new affordable way to get custom 2×3 magnets – I miss the 2x3s but cannot beat the Shitterfly cost and quality, so I rearranged the fridge to fit future 3x3s and will consider this completed.
Fitness – 1/1, A
- ✔ Run in a new-to-me state – completed! I ran in Georgia, twice!
- Run a race with a friend
- Get back to making playlists for my classes
Beauty – 0/3, F
- Find a lipstick that looks nice on me and wear it – nope. I looked in to it, but decided I want to go to a store and have someone help me. I won’t be doing that until the pandemic is “over.”
- Get regular haircuts – see “pandemic.”
- Learn to style my hair – nope. I am just lazy.
Reading – 3/3, A+
- ✔ Read a Harry Potter book – completed! I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in February and enjoyed it! (Enough that I read the second book in March, the third book in April, and plan to continue the series. Although the length of book four has been a turnoff so far. And J.K. Rowling being an ass on social media in 2020.)
- ✔ Read a Stephen King book – completed! I finished Sleeping Beauties on Thursday, March 26th.
- ✔ Read 50 books in 2020 – completed! I completed my 50th book on June 24th and upped my goal to 75 for the year! I completed my 75th book on September 18th and upped my goal to 100 for the year. I completed my 100th book on December 28th.
Work – 2/3, B
- ✔ Apply for the supervisor role – completed! I applied July 6 and found out I was selected for an interview on July 17, and had my first level interview on August 5. I was told on August 12 I would not get a second level interview. I had my debrief on September 3. (I ended up applying for a different promotion at work on October 14. I found out I was selected for an interview on October 23 and had my first level interview on November 16 and they told me on November 18 I was getting a second level interview (!!!!) and that was on November 20. And I got the job on December 2! I will be a Regional Account Manager (RAM) starting January 18.)
- ✔ – Lean on my teams for support – completed! I definitely got better about asking for help this year, and delegating. And as a surprise, having a new supervisor (yes, the role I applied for!) has been amazing and lifted a huge weight off my back I didn’t know was there! I’m grateful for that.
- Quit being so snarky and whiny- I did better but let’s be real – I’ll always be working on this. I think moving to a new team in January will give me a fresh start!
100 books!! That’s amazing! Congrats on more than doubling your initial goal!
It feels really weird to try to set any sort of goals for 2021. This year made the unpredictability of the future so clear, that going into 2021 saying, “I’m going to accomplish x!” seems a lot more blindly optimistic than it ever did in the past, especially with how up-in-the-air all of 2021 feels at this point. Though with how prominent mask-wearing has become, you probably won’t need to worry about lipstick any time particularly soon, ha! Other than for Zoom calls, I suppose, but as far as I’m concerned that’s what the “touch up my appearance” box is for 😛
Thank you! How has your reading been?
Yes! It feels so strange to set goals other than “survive” and “take care of myself and my family,” right? Ha, so we use Google (at work) which does not have that feature but I saw it in Zoom – I wonder if Google will copy that soon!
“Lackluster” would be how I’d describe my reading this year, ha. When the world shut down in March, I thought I’d make time for it, but that never really happened. I did get a library card to the library in our new town, though, so I’ve maintained my Libby access should I actually prioritize reading in 2021!
Despite the pandemic, you got a ton of stuff on your list done – good for you! And congratulations again about the new job – you really put yourself out there this year to move forward in your career and it paid off!
Thank you! And thanks again! I am looking forward to starting it in late January and learning so many new things!
I know you said that goal-setting doesn’t motivate you, but I’m glad you kept track of all these things. It’s neat to look back and see everything that you accomplished (or needed to strike from the list).
What’s the motivation behind the beauty things? Do you have a reason to wear lipstick? Often, with make-up, I feel like I’m a “bad adult woman” because I’m so bad at using it, but then I think that’s just marketing BS anyway.
As for reading, I’m *pretty* sure you should have an item for 2021: “Read every recommended book I see on the Kindle Special Offers screen” 😉
Yeah, I am glad about that part too! It makes me feel like I accomplished some stuff in 2020!
The motivation was to look more professional at work! I also admire some of my friends who wear lipstick and wanted to try it out myself and see if I liked it. Most days I look pretty sloppy. And it bugs me.
OMG yes! That is all I am going to read!
I think you did GREAT with your goals this year! I mean, I think we all failed in the beauty department this year, haha. Also, I’m also a lazy cat mom and it makes me feel better that you feel the same. I try to play with them (especially when they get in their playful moods) but sometimes I’m either busy or just don’t… wanna, lol. Sorry, girls.
I really want to do another reread of Harry Potter but ugh, JK has been such a disappointment that I don’t know if I can! Maybe in another year when her nonsense is further in the distance (of course, providing she doesn’t come back with MORE nonsense in 2021!)
I’m also mad impressed that your reading goal for this year was 50 books—and you doubled that! WTG!
Thank you! And yes, I am glad to have that reasoning for why I did not pursue my beauty goals, ha! It makes ME feel better to hear you say the same about the cats. Like, I play for a little bit then get bored. I need to set a timer for myself or something. I think they’d like it if I played with them more!
Right?! I had the entire series available on Kindle Unlimited but felt no desire to continue after her BS.
Thank you! I was surprised by it for sure! And feel grateful I could read so much and discover more about the kinds of books I like.
Surpassing your reading list twice. That is amazing. I love to read, but rarely read anymore. It makes me sad, but a lot of other life things have gotten in the way.
I keep 3 todo lists using 3 different apps. They all have their purpose and I get stuff done on each one (one is simply for store/grocery) so it works for the most part. Except of course the reading part.
Thanks! And yes, when life is busy I hardly read, which is why I got so much done this year, lol!
Oh cool! What are the three apps?
I usually don’t get around to writing a real goal/to-do list… and I am always super-impressed to see what others have accomplished at the end of the year. I’d say you did amazing!
Thanks! I usually don’t do one either – this type of thing does not seem to motivate me, but it was interesting to see where I ended up!
