I’m loving getting back into running. I run 3-4 times a week, doing run/walk intervals. Right now, we’re doing 6 minutes of running, and 1:30 minutes of walking. We’ve been steadily increasing our run interval time by a minute each week. Our 5K is 4 weeks from Sunday and I know we’ll be able to run the whole thing (we almost cover 5K distance in running each time we run).
I keep saying I want to run a half marathon in the fall, then remembering that when I saw Rachel, we discussed doing the Madison Mini Marathon (Half Marathon) on August 12! Much sooner than the fall!
It’s not for sure, but I wrote out what long runs would need to look like yesterday, and I need to start training right after we finish our 5K. Really, I should start before.
The plan in middle shows cut back weeks, the plan on right shows only 1 cut back week
I’m very eager to start, but really want to ease into the longer distances and listen to my body. I don’t want to overdo it and be greedy with running like I have in the past!
I had to look up the last half I did – it was Atlanta – over three years ago! I was signed up for the Milwaukee half (see quarter zip above) that following April then the pandemic happened.Β
Ooh my opinion that no one asked for is that if you want to do the half you should do the half!!! And also that when running is good, there will definitely be a little bit of greed involved;-)
Sigh and R.I.P. to all of the races that didn’t happen in 2020. The first one that I lost was the 2020 Chicago Shamrock Shuffle, and I did many others virtually.
Oh I definitely will do a half, IF my body is cool with it! It’s just a matter of do I do this one in Madison with Rachel or do something local by myself in the fall!
Ha, that is a true statement!
Gah! How many did you miss? I think I just had this one half marathon.
I am excited for you that you’re thinking of putting another HM on the calendar. A little greed along the way is normal, but I hope you can train AND listen to your body at the same time. Have fun with it!
Aww thank you! I hope I can too! And I know I will have fun! π
Do it! I will definitely cheer you on if you decide to do that half marathon!
Aww, thanks so much!
I feel like I’m sometimes the contrarian amongst your commenters (and sometimes I don’t comment b/c of that, oops!) but my unsolicited vote is see how the 5k goes first. And maybe even start some HM training before you make a decision. I feel like most races don’t really sell out aside from the big marathons, so you can probably wait and see how your body responds to longer distances again before you sign up!
I say this 1) as one of your old running buddies who knows what a big change it is for you to take pause before signing up (I would have signed up right away back in my running heyday too!) and 2) as someone who has taken many long breaks from running. Every time I’ve taken a break, getting back into it has been a little harder. And last year when I tried to start again my body flat out said NO, so I listened and hung up my running shoes. I don’t think it’ll come to that for you by any means, but you’re doing such a good job at taking care of yourself this year; I think this is another area where it’s worth taking a little time to figure things out.
Obviously you’ll have loads of support if you DO end up training for a HM π
I appreciate you sharing your input, especially when it’s different!
And that is exactly what I plan to do. I won’t be signing up for anything until I know I can do it safely without harming myself! My mindset about racing really changed before the pandemic (as in, I stopped caring about it, ha) so I am not in any rush to sign up for much!
Yes, my opinion is close to Anne’s – I would start the HM training and see how your body does and how YOU feel. If it feels good, then sign up for the HM. I think it’s exciting that running is feeling good and you want to do a HM, though!
That is exactly my plan! I am excited and hopeful! Thanks for being excited for me! π
I’m excited for you, and think your plan of 5K-then-see is a really smart one. If you stop having fun or feel like you HAVE to run, then back off! I think you really have a good idea of what you want right now, which is awesome. π
Thank you! And that is exactly what I will do! I’ve been really enjoying the shorter distances and if that is what my body wants, we’ll stay there.
