Another food related post, please skip if that’s not your jam!
When we were at POP Cats on Saturday the cookie food truck had a vegan chocolate chip cookie and I felt compelled to buy it, because it was vegan. And I am vegan! 1 + 1 = 2, or something, right?
The thing is though… I don’t even like chocolate chip cookies that much (I prefer the ones without any chips in them). I would never choose chocolate chip in a lineup, and was only buying it because it was the one vegan option. And I didn’t really even want a cookie – I had just walked over there to see if they had vegan options, then ended up with it.*
Ha. So why did I even buy it?
I became vegan in June of 2010 when vegan food options were picking up but were nowhere near as common (in large cities) as they are now. Back then, it was like “wow, they have a vegan cookie option and I am going to get it no matter what it is**, because it’s so novel!”
I think I still act that way, even though it’s not as novel now. Kim sees vegan option, Kim must buy, even if she does not really want.
It’s a good problem – more people offering at least one vegan option is a great thing. I just need to remind myself I don’t HAVE to try it.
Kind of but not quite related, I did want a vegan donut that morning, and googled vegan donuts around where we were going to be and nothing came up so I was super pumped with the Stan’s Donuts by Starbucks had one!
And their one was a yeast based (my favorite) Cinnamon Sugar donut. So in this situation, the one available worked out in my favor!
*I did enjoy it though! I always like having something sweet after a meal – a habit I need to break
**Unless it has nuts in it, that’s a deal breaker for me
I’m with you on chocolate chips cookies – there’s nothing wrong with them, but I can take them or leave them. Make it a WHITE chocolate chip cookie and then you’ve got a deal!
Glad it’s not just me! I thought I was the only one! I haven’t had a white chocolate chip one!
I feel this way about some desserts, too! I do love a chocolate chip cookie but it has to be a very specific one (I like them soft and gooey!). I don’t love most pastries, donuts, and pies, so I’m never tempted by them. But sometimes I do find myself eating something just because it’s there, and if I took a step back to consider if I *really* wanted to eat it, I think I would say no! It’s all about that second of pause!
Do you like them hot out of the oven soft and goeey or room temperature soft and gooey? I know some people who like cookies straight out of the oven and I don’t at all!
That’s exactly what it is! Last night we ordered an appetizer that was not that good but did I eat it all because it was there and we ordered it? Yep. Ugh. Baby steps!
I hate that voice in my head that says, “But they have it, you should take advantage! Buy what you can eat!” even when I don’t like or even want the thing. This happens to me ALL the time while traveling. Then I come home and I never know what to do with the now-unwanted food. Sigh. So I feel you. No solutions, unfortunately, other than just telling myself NO. 🙂
OMG, good point, I totally do this at the store too. Or just overbuy in general and I don’t need that many bags of chips!!!! Yes to telling ourselves NO, lol.
