My heart is just filled with joy from these photos my friend Tricia sent this morning. And I’m a little teary-eyed.
There is a memorial bench in a preserve in our community, for Griffin (aka birdlion), who passed away when he was nineteen in 2018. The bench has a Star Wars quote on it (May the force be with you), and his family started a kindness rock group/tag specifically for him (#birdlion – see here on Facebook), and often hides rocks on that bench.
Tricia had the wonderful idea for rock painters to come together and flood his bench with rocks on Star Wars Day, to show our love and support for the family. And it’s turned out beautifully.
Tricia is amazing and incredibly thoughtful for coming up with this idea, and I’m so glad she included me! I hope seeing the bench like this makes Griffin’s family feel good, and brings joy to people visiting the preserve.

I just love the rock painting community.
This is AWESOME!!!! Such a special way to keep his memory alive! So happy that you could be a part of it!!! β€οΈ
Isn’t it?! It makes me so happy that I could participate too. It sounds like the family was very touched by it. <3
Oh my heart. What a lovely thing to do.
Isn’t it? And the family wrote a lovely note where it was posted on Facebook. <3
Awww…that is lovely! Indeed, what a nice way to remember Griffin!
It really made me feel so good to see it yesterday!!! His family took home the big rock and a few others π
This is so sweet and special. What a lovely way to honor him. I’m sure his family was so grateful!
It was such a brilliant idea and I am so grateful I was asked to be part of it!
Wow. What a lovely, lovely thing to do for this family. And how hideous that they lost their family member so young. It’s never a good time to lose a family member, honestly, but 19? It hurts my heart. I hope that your rocks help them heal, just a bit.
That is how I feel too. The gesture did make them feel good π
