- We’ve mostly been cooking at home since the restaurants in Illinois closed for dine-in (take-out is allowed) on March 17th, but we got El Famous to go on Monday, and it totally hit the spot. I’d been craving Mexican food, and my body was all sorts of confused why it hadn’t had any, since we’re usually at El Famous twice a month (or more).
- One of the items on my personal COVID-19 related thoughts list (which I will post at some point) is how grateful I am for our home gym. I miss talking to my students when I do strength workouts, but I can lift a lot heavier at home, and it feels GOOD. (I am so sore, ha!)
- I’ve been handling anxiety well lately (except when it comes to grocery shopping), and feel content at home, but I finally had a breaking point yesterday where I couldn’t deal with my (internal) anger at work anymore. I took two hours of leave to do a short run, take a hot bath, then nap, and I finally felt better. I hope I handle things more calmly today.
- Did you see Aliphine’s article in Women’s Running (pdf here) about her reaction to the Olympics being postponed? I feel sad she has to skip seeing her family in Kenya again, and that they were planning on starting a family after the games and now have to wait.
- We took a break from The Wire and are watching Homeland. The Wire was too much work for me to follow, and now’s not a good time for that. With our Illinois stay-at-home order extended until April 30th, maybe we’ll finish Homeland this month?! <— you gotta dream big!

I’m with you, I need easy to watch shows right now. That’s too bad about Aliphine and starting her family – I know the delay in the Olympics has to be hard on so many of the athletes. Another year of training, another year of hoping to not get injured before the games.
Anger is normal right now, so is despair. Sunday was not great for me but I’m better now. Even vacuumed my floors, which weirdly makes me look at my life in a good way.
Exactly. The Wire was making me work too hard! What are you watching?
Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of articles saying that about athletes having to wait another year to try. And yes, another year of hopefully no injury! Another article I read was about this sprinter who is like, “I was pushing it to be in the 2020 Olympics… not sure my body will let me do it in 2021”!
Thank you for saying that! And I am glad you feel better! I love it when my floors are clean, especially in the summer when I am not wearing socks – I HATE having things stick to my feet.
Did that ice cream come?!
I just finished up Schitt’s Creek; my friend recommended The Boys, about corrupt superheroes, so I may look for it next.
We got both gallons of ice cream! And the hot fudge sauce, so I am a happy camper, especially because they were out – OUT – of candy bars. That is so crazy. Also watched a man get upset at curbside pickup because the grocery workers were bringing out packs of TP to vehicles – just TP, not even a cart of groceries – and he had words with one of the workers. Next thing you know, she’s bringing out his order…two large packs of paper napkins. HAHAHAHAHA you know he couldn’t get TP so got the next best thing. Funniest part was that I’d ordered TP, just the store brand, figuring I should start trying for some because this is going on for so long. I picked two different kinds; they’ve been out of so much that I was just hoping to get one. Nope – I got both. HAHAHAHA to that man all over again. At least we got groceries along with the TP. Anyway, we’re good for April now. And that was the most entertaining part of my day.
We liked The Boys! Very vulgar and gory 😉
OMG YES! Gallons! Perfect! So that should last like, a week? Ha! 😉 The candy bars surprises me. I wonder what that is about!
Gah, that dude. Sigh. I feel bad that he was not able to get what he wanted but that does not mean he gets to be a dick, and mad that everyone else was able to order it. Especially to these workers who are under so much stress anyway. Eff off, dude!
I might have already whined about this in a comment on one of your posts, so apologies if this is a repeat whine from me, but access to the gym is EASILY one of the things I miss the most in all of this. It’s thrown off my entire workout routine, and I hate it. I can run at my normal level, which is nice, but that accounted for less than half of my usual weekly workouts. Without access to anything heavier than a 10 pound dumbbell, my usual strength training routine is totally shot, as is my post-strength cardio on the bike or elliptical (not to mention my reading time!). I’ve been doing workout videos on YouTube, which are okay, but they’re only okay. It’s just really hard to find videos at my ability level (as opposed to below it or above it) without wasting a ton of time previewing them, compared to putting together your own workouts, which will obviously always be exactly at my skill level. And I realize that in the grand scheme of things, this is SUCH a small sacrifice and such a small problem, but it’s still annoying. I’m glad you’re experiencing the opposite and now are able to workout to your ability level!
You can repeat whine to me about this. I don’t mean this to sound bad, but it makes me more appreciative of what we have, when I realize not everyone has this in their basement (gah, I really hope that doesn’t not sound snooty – that is not my intent). It’s definitely a small sacrifice but it suuuuuucks because working out makes us feel so good! I did not even think about the time spent trying to find videos that are at your level, but good point – they could easily be too easy or too hard! And it’s not like everyone can just drop a bunch of money on equipment or even have the space for it 🙁 And we can’t even use outside workout equipment in parks! I hope you come across some better videos soon!
Not snooty at all! I was worried I would come across as bitter, which also isn’t my intent, since I am genuinely happy that you get to do the workouts you want to do now – not having the option to do them myself anymore makes me realize how frustrating it is to not work at the level you want to!
Phew! And you definitely did not come off as bitter. I know you’ve recently gotten in to such a great strength routine and that’s a huge part of your week and to not be able to do it, well, it’s like not being able to do an essential task that keeps you going! I’d be a grump!!!!
I’ve been doing takeout on Friday nights and that’s been helping me somewhat. I’m glad I only have to cook for myself, but man, it’s hard to summon up the motivation to cook on weekends! That’s always been a struggle for me.
Taking that two-hour break from work must have felt so rejuvenating! I’m glad you were able to do that. I’ve been having my own anger issues at work, ughhhh, and I’m glad for some coworkers I can vent to.
Friday night takeout sounds like something really fun to look forward to at the end of the week! I hate cooking and am surprised we haven’t gotten takeout more! So don’t feel bad you don’t have the motivation too because I never do 😉
It really did! A coworker of mine has been taking whole days off when we have nice weather and I can’t do that (well, assuming I still need that leave for summer vacations that are planned) but I can do some hours here and there.
I am sorry you are having anger issues at work too. And especially now that you are bringing that in to the home 🙁 I am glad you have coworkers to vent too. You can always vent to me, too xoxo
I’m so glad you got El Famous! Did you get fries? (I’ve been on the fence about take-out/delivery fries because I do love them but they’re not as good when they get soggy from transport. Your thoughts??)
I’m glad you were able to take a break from work drama and do some relaxing things. Your home gym also seems really useful right now. Does Steven use it too? (I’ve been making do in an apartment, with semi comical results.)
I did get fries and yes they are not as good when you get home with them. Sigh. Such a conundrum! They taste good when you heat them up as leftovers! (HA JK we didn’t have any leftover fries HA HA HA)
Steven hasn’t been using it because he gets most of his workouts in on the garage! I keep inviting him down to work out with me though! What have you been using to work out at home?
