Despite the garage being weather-proofed for the winter, we’ve been holding back on moving anything permanently over to it, because we were considering coating the concrete floor (to make it more durable), and we did NOT want to move everything over, just to take everything out again to do that.
So we got a quote Monday of last week, and decided to pay to have it done. We’ve done a similar (but not the same) coating of our storage room floor, and that was so much freaking work, we’d rather pay someone to do this. The coating we did before was epoxy, and this is polyurea, which is supposed to be better.
We picked out our paint/chip colors on Saturday, cleared the garage Sunday (ha, despite not putting much in there, it still took three hours to clear it), and the floor was coated on Monday!
They sanded it,
painted it, threw the chips down, and sealed it!
It cures quickly, so we can start putting things in there PERMANENTLY now! This is pretty exciting – if we move over the half of our house garage being used to store building supplies, Steven could park his car IN THE HOUSE GARAGE!!! CAT MAKING HOME ALONE FACE!!!

My first thought when I started reading this was, “I wonder why they hired someone to do this when they’ve DIYed so much of this garage.” Thank you for answering my question before I even had to ask it! Haha. That makes a lot of sense to me. After re-reading your post about doing it in the basement, I’m not surprised you guys didn’t want to commit to doing a similar project all over again. The floor looks SO fancy now! That before and after is really impressive!
You are welcome! And good question! We considered it, but after the cost of supplies and renting equipment it was better to pay someone else to do it. Thanks – we are happy with how it turned out!
Doing it in the basement was such. a. process. I can’t imagine doing it outside for a much bigger space!
Congratulations on the floor coating! I’m glad you were able to pay someone to do it; it seems like enough work just cleaning out the space and prepping for the coating.
Are those orange wires by the wall coming out of the…MANIFOLD?
Thanks! I am so glad we did too. And so glad we can move things over permanently now.
Yes! They are! Those are the radiant heating tubes π
OK, it’s really so weird to read about the things I have to write about for work. (We do a LOT in the home improvement space.) I only recently learned that garage floor coatings were a thing (I’ve grown up in apartments all my life, haha, I didn’t know this existed!) and had to do so much research to figure out WHAT they were and why they mattered. And lemme tell you, I can give you ALL the reasons why a polyurea floor coating is better than an epoxy one. Hahaha. I know so much useless info! π
Ha! Does it make it more real, like wow, people actually do this stuff?! I am glad to hear that your research shows we picked the right type of flooring!
