- Seeing Apollo and Starbuck’s mom, Athena, enjoying their Christmas tree made me sad I didn’t put one up for our monsters to destroy.
- My mom really likes the Collins Street Bakery fruitcake, which I call a “hork cake,” because it looks and sounds disgusting. (Sorry, Mom). I ordered it for her once and the bakery often sends me mail, including a pre filled out order form, with the message in it that I sent used the one time I ordered it for my mom! Ha ha ha.
- My face was sore for a few days after I smacked myself. It hurt when eating or when putting on chapstick. It’s all better now, though! Current stupid sore spots are my tongue (I bit it so hard Monday night I drew blood) and my finger (cut it on a cat food can). Such a klutz.
- I finished Severance! What an enjoyable, quick read! The ending made me wish for a sequel, like Little Fires Everywhere did. I’ve started The Kennedy Debutante but am only two chapters in.
- I kind of forgot about the Winter Solstice and how our days are still getting shorter. I miss having more daylight running hours! (But love going to bed earlier because it’s so dark out.)
- Now that I’ve had the new site up for a while I’m noticing a lot of things I want to change (which does not surprise me!) and some things that didn’t transfer right, like missing archives. Thanks for your patience as I modify it over time!

Fun fact: We drive right by the Collin Street Bakery on our way to visit our daughter in Dallas. We stopped and ate lunch there once and had some treats from their bakery. Which leads me to another fun fact: right around the corner from CSB is the Russell Stover factory outlet. I should take a picture of the inside next time we stop there…it’s ginormous. They have a huge room full of discounted chocolate, and let’s just say we never leave empty-handed. But your repeated message printed on the pre-filled order form is making me laugh so much…makes me want to send someone a hork cake (I’m with you on fruit cakes, blech) with that same message!
How fun! How was lunch and the bakery?! And do send me a pic of the Russel Stover outlet. Yum. I used to love their chocolates before I went vegan.
LOL, do eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. And make sure you tell them it’s a hork cake, not a fruit cake!
Lunch there was OK – it’s right off the highway so they get a lot of buses and huge crowds, although it wasn’t busy when we were there, but I think they have to make a lot of food fairly quickly and it kind of showed. Or maybe they were just having an off day when we were there. Bakery items were good but we still think Blue Baker has the best cookies ever (and believe me, we sample them everywhere, in the name of RESEARCH).
Ahh, yeah, I bet it wasn’t an off day if that is the crowd they are typically serving.
Of course Blue Baker’s is better! And you must continue this research everywhere you go (that is what I am doing with vegan donuts).
LOL at the fruit cake message! I definitely don’t get the appeal of fruit cake. Similarly, my mom loves Stollen Bread and I always thought it was gross as a kid (even though it’s something I’d probably make now) and just last week I bought her two loaves of her gross bread, and told her, yet again, how gross it looked. Twinsies.
Thank goodness for the winter solstice being only a couple weeks away. It doesn’t get dark here until 5, but the days are still super gloomy and sun-less, so I’m ready to be on the other side of that soon.
Do you remember fruitcake being a big joke (about what a horrible gift it is) on sitcoms as a kid? I never understood that until I saw one in person. Ha. Ha ha ha. Stollen Bread looks gross for the same reasons.
Yeah, we’ve had such a rough end to fall, right? I am actually hoping winter will be better. Ha!
I didn’t realize that Little Fires everywhere had a sequel! Like you mentioned in a previous post, for SO LONG all I have read is non-fiction, biographies, professional literature, etc that I am not “used to” reading in this format. I joined a virtual book club from an IRL friend that has since moved to Seattle and “Little Fires Everywhere” was our October book. I would have loved to delve into Mia’s life in NYC in the 70s/80s so I’m glad to see that the author has at least given us more of the story going forward…
Our November book was “Heartless” by Marissa Meyer which I also enjoyed and several have recommended her “Lunar Chronicles” series but I haven’t been able to “get into it” yet.
It doesn’t! I am saying I wish it did, and I wish Severance did too. Sorry to get you excited! Although they are making a mini series of it, so you’ll get a peek in that world.
I will look in to those! Thanks! It sounds like you are getting in to the book club! Do you guys discuss the books in posts on Facebook or something?
HAHAHAHA what a message! That’s hilarious. At least you included an xoxo at the end 😛
I’ve definitely noticed that the days are STILL getting shorter (HOW. How is there still more daylight to lose?!). Now it’s dark when I wake up AND when I leave work, instead of just one or the other. Sigh. I needed to leave early yesterday, and it was SO delightful to walk out of the office when there was still light outside!
XOXO, JK Mom! Ha!
That is what I am wondering. HOW. I usually handle this a lot better, but coupled with how cold I’ve been, it’s making me a little moody. I’m glad you got some daylight on Wed when you left early!
I looked at the “hork cake” and think it looks the same as about all other fruit cakes. Is there something about that particular bakery’s cake that you find gross? (That being said, I am not a fan of fruit cake.) It’s still a cute present though with your very thoughtful message.
The shorter days bug me too but not as much as the switch off DST. And I was just thinking about how the shorter days/earlier sunset makes it easier to enjoy the Christmas decorations and lights on my commute home. It’s a pain for running and being outside though!!
Nothing specific about that one – I don’t like them in general. I think it’s a texture thing with the jellied fruit (???) and whole or chopped nuts.
Yes, the holiday does make the darkness better! Then January comes. Ha! I do like going to bed earlier because it’s so dark!
Maybe you should get a mini tree just for the cats 🙂
I’m still waiting on severance (I requested a hold at the library).
We have one I could put up!
Ooo, I know you will let me know when you get it. I am anxious to hear what you think. I am not digging the Kennedy Debutante so far. Too many characters for me. Ha.
