Today marks one year since I’ve graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Architecture.
Woo-hoo!
I hate to admit it, but I am curious as to what my classmates are doing. I wonder who’s working, who’s not, who hates their job, and who loves it.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much more I like work than school. School is good for learning to be creative and think conceptually… but it is so much neater to see something you design being built. In real life.
A few weeks ago a client called me and rattled on and on about how much the staff loves the new space we designed for them, and all the details and thought that went into it. That made me feel good.
(The next week the client called and told me the staff was complaining and nitpicking. Hey, I had my moment while it lasted).

Today’s Idiom: feeling no pain – drunk
After a couple of glasses of wine, I was feeling no pain and ready to meet up with the in-laws. What can I say? I’m a light-weight.
(Just kidding!)
Excellent Kim, that’s fantastic that you enjoy your job, and a bachelors in architecture, what an accomplishment! WAY TO GO GIRL! You are so lucky to love your job. I also, love my job and I cannot imagine having to go to a place I hate every day/night. It’d be rather depressing π
I like my job just fine, but I would love to be in college again.
In fact, last night I dreamt that E. and I were in college together and I asked him if that meant I didn’t have to work anymore. He said, “This is a dream, don’t ask questions.” Ha!
I think I like being in the work force, but then there are days when I miss being in school. I guess I get a little nostalgic.
Two things reminded me of you in the past 24 hrs:
This morning’s NYT crossword clue: 18 down: University Town Near Des Moines (I got the answer).
Yesterday I was watching a show on Chicago foods. Have you ever had one of those rainbow cones?
Rare is the day, it seems, when clients/bosses/co-workers tell you you’re doing something right. So fantastic your client didn’t shy away from some much-deserved praise!
I do not miss being in school AT ALL. I mean, sure I miss my friends and the dorm life sometimes, but working is where I need to be right now. I don’t miss classes, tests, teachers…no way! My roommate and I were just discussing this earlier this evening because this weekend marks her “1 yr since graduation” anniversary.
Love your idiom π
Lumpy – I can’t imagine it either, and I am going to make a promise to myself RIGHT NOW to get out of any job like that as soon as possible (if I ever find myself in that situation).
diane – You could still get a Graduate’s Degree… or a Doctorate!
Gina (Mannyed) – I thought you today too! I read in the elevator that Lindsay Lohan’s mom was voted one of “Top 20 Long Island Moms.” That made me think of you. Heh. I haven’t had a rainbow cone! I don’t know what it is! TELL ME! π
Nilsa S. – Amen to that. Praise really helps morale. Some people … don’t get it.
Bethany – Yeah, I miss friends too, but not class! And all those silly projects!
