I watched a reel last week that posed the question “do you wonder why time seems to go by faster as you age?”

Why yes, yes I do!

This is the part where it would be helpful if I still had the link to this reel. Or maybe not—it was one of those reels that uses animal gifs to explain the concept. Ha ha ha.

Anyway, the gist of it was, our perception of time changes as we age, because our brains slow down in how they process info. Fewer new mental images are being created and stored, which makes time feel like it’s moving faster. You have so many new experiences when you are younger, and less life overall to compare it to, that time feels like it’s moving slower.

Or something.

I didn’t really get it 😂 It’s complex and there’s more sciency explanations online if you want to dive deeper.

Anyway! It went on to say that doing the same thing day in and out will make time feel like it’s moving faster (which is interesting, because in the moment that seems ho hum and mundane and slow-moving and boring, but the concept must be that over time all that sameness is blending together into a big perceived fast-moving nothing-burger of a life). And that if you want to combat the perception of time moving faster, to engage in novel experiences and activities that stimulate your mind.

Okay, even if I don’t understand the science, that part just MAKES SENSE. Doing things that are new to me, or that are outside of my normal routine does make it feel like time is slowing down. So, more of that, please.

Flying definitely counts! It’s still novel and challenges my brain every time and I’m not even the pilot 😂
