Steven gave me a beautiful watercolor of Penny for my birthday. I choked up a bit when I opened it. It’s so lovely!

It’s from the same artist (dimdi on Etsy) who did watercolors of our first cat Data, and of our first full time outdoor stray cat Snow Sr.

I’m really excited to add Penny to the wall, so I went to the store to buy a frame today, bringing the watercolor with me.

I got all the way to the back of the store where the frames are, walked around a bit, and found two I’d consider buying. So I went to get the watercolor out of the envelope it came in.

I peered in and thought something looked off. Like the two protective covers the watercolor was between were much thinner than I remembered.

And that’s because they were—there was only one in there, and the watercolor was GONE.

My heart sank. I tried to remember my walk to and through the store. Did I accidentally hold the envelope upside down? I didn’t think so. Could it be at home?! I also didn’t think so—I didn’t remember anything else being on the counter after I grabbed it this morning.

I picked one of the frames and retraced my steps, looking for it. Nothing.

I checked out and asked the cashier if she’d seen anything like it. She said no.

I walked out the store and headed toward my car. Next to the aisle I parked in, I could see what looked like a white sheet of paper. Could it be?!?!

I picked it up, and there she was, my sweet Penn. Definitely run over, with a little tear over her eye.

But otherwise fine.

Even the loose note the artist put in the package was sitting there. How they didn’t float away in the wind, I’ll never know (or how the hell I dropped them).

Sigh.

I wanted to cry again. The unknown only lasted 8 minutes, she was mostly unscathed, and geesh, it’s just a piece of paper, but I would have been so sad had I lost it or it gotten unintentionally ruined by a car.

Now she’s back home!
