Welcome to another edition of “Inside Kim’s Brain,” a scary place we sometimes explore together.
So today a customer asked for some information with the state code MP. And I am like “what the f state is MP??” I love geography. How do I not know this state?!
Then a memory is triggered of another instance where I didn’t know something you learn in primary school, this time, history.
On July 3rd we got dinner out at this burger place, and we were both like “wait is that the waiter who quizzed us on history the last time we were here?!”
Sure enough, when it was time to pay, he told us if we could get 4/5 history questions correct (ha ha ha!) he’d give us our appetizer for free.
Spoiler: no free app for us.
Question 1: What was the first state in the Union?
Our guess: Maryland
Correct answer: Delaware
Question 2: Which amendment gave women the right to vote?
Sigh, I was like, “AHHHHH!!!!!! I should now this one!”
Our guess: 18th
Correct answer: 19th
UGHHHHHHH.
So we talked a bit—he wants to be a history teacher, which is why he’s so into all this. We told him we played this game with him before and we lost on state capitals. He asked me New Hampshire’s, and I was like “GDammit Steven, we were there!” Then with a hint of the first letter I got to Concord.
He quizzed us on who Obama ran against in 2008 (John McCain) but I could only remember 2012 (Mitt Romney).
He also asked us the circumference of a circle and I said πr2 and he said I was right but that’s the area, ha. It’s actually 2πr. Oops.
Long story long, I don’t remember this stuff, as you all know. But I have fun guessing!

Oh, and MP is the Northern Mariana Islands.
I would have been able to answer the 19th Amendment, Concord, and the circumference and area of a circle (the circumference is the derivative of the area = that’s a fun fact I learned in Calculus that I cannot unlearn), but I’m useless on the rest. Oh, well. Trivia is not my jam, I guess!
