This post is mostly for me for my records but it’s public, so obviously, feel free to read and comment, ha.
I’ve completed all the pre-tests for my appointment with the vascular doctor this Friday.
On Friday they drew blood and tested four things:
- Prothrombin Time – this measures how long it takes blood to clot. I measured 2.3 which is above normal range for people not on Warfarin, but is normal for people on Warfarin (me).
- Blood Clot Factor II Test – this measures the activity of factor II/prothrombin. This is one of the proteins in the body that helps the blood clot. I measured 22% which is below range, but also affected by Warfarin.
- Beta 2 Glycoprotein – this is an antibody test to diagnose Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). I was hoping I’d test negative, but I tested positive (all my numbers are higher than the normal range).
- Anti-Cardiolipin AB, BL – this is another antibody test to look for cardiolipin antibodies and test for APS. I was also hoping I’d test negative but tested positive and high on everything.
They’ve gone back and forth with telling me I have APS (a disorder of the immune system that causes an increased risk of blood clots). They put it in my record as me having it then the last time I saw the doctor in December he said there had not been enough testing to determine I do. Maybe he will know on Friday, or want to test some more. I really hope I do NOT have it so I don’t have to take blood thinners for the rest of my life (but if I do, I do).
And finally, I had my ultrasound yesterday, and they are not supposed to tell you but *wink wink* I still have NO clots in my right leg, and no new ones in my left leg, and they can still see the scar tissue from the three i had/have. I’m not sure if they are still there or not (again, they weren’t supposed to tell me anything) but I will take no new ones as good news!
Congrats! I hope the follow-up continues to bring good news. It’s so frustrating when they can’t come up with a diagnosis, but at least it sounds like they’re taking your treatment seriously and you have a good plan of action!
Thanks! I do too! And they are definitely taking it seriously. My doctor errs on the conservative side with my care. LOL.
This is really interesting to read! I’m glad you haven’t developed any new clots – that’s good to hear! I hope you don’t have to be on blood thinners for the rest of your life, so I will be crossing my fingers for good news!
I was so glad I had no new clots! He did tell me he wants me to be on blood thinners for life today, womp womp.
Oh, man, sorry about the diagnosis and blood thinners for life. BUT so, so glad you were diagnosed, that you have a careful doc (I prefer careful, myself) and that your u/s had good results! Keep it up! You’re adapting amazingly well. 🙂
Aww thanks so much for the encouragement, I really appreciate it!
