- We have a steeply sloped roof and the snow collects there then melts off into our yard, creating huge piles. Every winter we have a huge pile like this on our deck, but it’s never been so large that it touches the glass. Eek!
- When I shoveled on Sunday I created a path around the house and to the deck for the stray cat, Ghost, to use (he sleeps under the deck). I was so happy to see his paw prints and know he’s using it! I wish he’d use the cat house, but he doesn’t.
- I received surprising news from the library this week. Apparently I never should have had a free library card there because we live outside their district in an unincorporated area that does not pay library taxes. I confirmed all this – despite our EXREMELY high taxes, none go to the library, and we are outside of their mapped district even though I live in the city of the same name. I had NO idea. If I want a library card, I have to pay a $154 non-resident fee each year, starting 2/27/21. I can afford it, and they deserve the money, and my reading hobby is worth it, but I am so pissed off about the taxes thing I think I will go without one for a while and see how it goes. This made me so upset the day they called me. I feel better now and am ready to look into other solutions (before deciding if I will pay the fee).
- For months our work IT has said to leave our computers on 24/7 until we get the new Office Suite and it was finally installed on my laptop yesterday so I can FINALLY TURN THAT DAMN THING OFF AT NIGHT. Yay! I haven’t used my multiple monitor set up with my personal laptop for months since I’ve left my work laptop plugged in there.
- We’ve been watching Bloodline on lunch break, and it’s just such a bad, boring show. Don’t watch it.
- At the nail salon last week I saw part of that show Fixer Upper and thought it looked fun to watch (I’d never seen it before)… then lo and behold I had an ad for a discounted price of the Discovery+ app (which includes that show) in Facebook yesterday, so we decided to sign up! Discovery was one of Steven’s favorite channels when we had cable at our old house (5+ years ago! We’re coming up on 5 years here this weekend!!!!). He likes the homes shows, car shows, and the gold digging shows. I am excited to watch the last horrible episode of Bloodline then pick something new to watch on Discovery+.

Oh wow, that is such a bummer about your library membership – that seems like a lot of money to me for one year! I can totally understand why you were bummed and why you want to think about it first before signing up. That rule really discourages people from using the library.
Our library charges 6 euros per year for anyone over 18 to become a member – anyone, from anywhere!!! Kids can get a free membership. It doesn’t matter where you live! Same in other libraries here – my husband has a membership in the Brussels library because he can stop in there on his lunch break.
It seemed like a lot of money to me for a year too. 🙁 I wish we had something more like your system where it wasn’t based on residence and you paid a flat fee. If I had kids they could use the e-learning stuff for free here, as a non-resident, but adults can’t. Sigh. A little discouraging for reading for adults .
Very discouraging! Yes, I would definitely get a stash of books before your free membership expires!
I got 6 hard copies today!
Smart move! Looking forward to hearing about them!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Fixer Upper (I even shop at Magnolia.com and wear a bunch of their apparel). I think I’ve seen every episode of the older version of the show and want to sign up for Discovery+ for the new one. There are so many great home renovation shows on HGTV. I love several and default to that channel when I can’t find anything else to watch . I think between Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock and now Discovery+ it’s getting easier and easier to think about dropping cable altogether.
Oh fun! I know a lot of people who just love their shop for houseware. I didn’t know they have clothes too!
Yeah, the only cable channel we missed was HGTV and Discovery! It’s nice to be able to pick what we want a la carte and cancel whenever too.
I love fixer upper! I have been pondering the 7 day free trial to watch Courage to Run which is about Gabe Grunewald and Chip Gaines.
I saw that was on there! I think I am going to watch it tomorrow if I end up running on the treadmill. Did you sign up for it so you could watch?
Now that we have a yard, we got really curious about the paw prints we see in the snow. We haven’t had any surprises–looks like most of our backyard critters are squirrels and rabbits, which we see regularly and knew about–but it’s cool to be able to look at their prints and know exactly who is coming and going, and where! I’ve only ever seen rabbits on the very edge of our yard, but according to their prints, sometimes they come up right along the side of the house. I never would’ve known!
That’s a real bummer about the library 🙁 Are your taxes going to the city? I know everyone lives in a “city” (or town or village or whatever) for mail purposes, and just because you live in the city for mail purposes doesn’t actually mean you live in that town–like where I grew up, we lived outside the village limits of the town that was our mailing address. We happened to live in a township by the same name, but the people on the other side of the street lived in a different township. Their mailing address still used the village’s name–but if you’re paying city taxes, it seems nuts that none of them would go to the library. So frustrating!
Fixer Upper is the best!!!! I love Chip and Joanna!! I’m tempted to subscribe to Discovery+ just so I can watch HGTV shows, but we already have plenty of subscription packages, and goodness knows I’m barely scraping the surface of what they have to offer as it is, so I don’t think we really need to add another one to our list. Plus, access to HGTV is just going to give me unrealistic expectations about what I can do to our house, ha!
That is the fun part about winter – seeing the prints and seeing where they go! I am surprised they go so close to the house too!
Our taxes go to some really crappy schools in the city, some to the county, then to the township, none to the city (other than the schools). It makes sense to me now, but I didn’t know. I am curious what your parents’ library situation is now? How you grew up sounds similar to the situation I am in!
There are SO MANY shows on there! SO MANY! We were kind of overwhelmed by it all. LOL at your comment about unrealistic expectations!!! Is HGTV on Disney+ or only on Discovery?
Wow that’s a lot of snow.
The thing about the library card sucks, there should be a different solution if you live in the city, but outside their mapped district. That’s BS.
I think we got about 14-16″ last week, total? It is a lot! And we got more yesterday.
I agree. But it’s true our taxes don’t pay for it 🙁
That is a ton of snow.
We do have a lot! Do you have much?
Hardly any snow this winter here in SLC. Just brutal cold temps (it gets into the low 20’s).
Man, the library thing seems really ridiculous. I understand the need for financial support but that needs to be balanced with what people get from libraries, too.
And, wow – the snow! I hope it’s still outside and not finding its way inside at this point!
Yeah 🙁 Sigh. It’s especially a bummer to learn after I’ve really grown to love using our library, and the people who work there too.
It is! Phew!
That snow buildup is CRAZY!!
I forgot about Ghost! I’m glad he’s using the deck. So sweet.
The whole library situation is so frustrating. Get as many ebooks as you can download and then turn off your wifi on your Kindle! Then, they’ll stay there until you turn the wifi back on, even if your loan period expires. Muahaha.
My dentist plays Fixer Upper in all the rooms so that’s the only time I ever get to see Chip and Joanna, haha. It’s always really enjoyable, though, and makes my cleanings go by really fast!
Steven saw Ghost go there again! I need to clear off part of the deck and leave food out for him.
I was thinking about doing that with my Kindle. Ha! How horrible of me! I requested a bunch of hard copy books too. If they go past their due date, what does it matter? All fees are forgiven, and the only thing you can’t do when you have a “fee” is check out books and I can’t anyway…
Ha, that’s funny! And what is not funny is we cannot figure out if we can actually watch their old shows on this app. Ha. That is okay. There is a TON of other stuff on there.
LOL at your assessment of Bloodline. We watched it when it was new and I did not get the hype! I love Kyle Chandler so probably would have finished out the show just to watch him, but man, it was soooooo boring. And every member of that family is just awful, in one way or another, so I didn’t even care what happened.
Yep, exactly. Everything you said. Seasons 2 and 3 were even more boring, but somehow more random. At the end they kept introducing new characters… to try to spice it up? Steven got so mad he wanted to quit in the penultimate episode (where the main guy enters an alternative reality where he didn’t kill his brother) and I was like, we didn’t watch this much of this sh*t show to stop now. But yeah, would never recommend it.
