It’s time for another round of rock painting inspiration! They’re in order of how I feel about how they turned out (from best to worst):
Last week Mica sent me a pic of a rock she found with a cat riding a chicken and I was inspired to do something similar. I copied this Microsoft cat riding a t-rex. Faces and hands are hard to draw, but I’ll get better with practice (I hope). I love how T-Rex’s teeth turned out.

Snister sent me an image of these flannel joggers with pups in PJs on them. Too cute! I’m going to hide these on my walk tomorrow.
I already shared these, but I love them so I will again – snister also sent me an image of these cats in coffee mugs. I hid these Monday last week.
Mom sent me a picture of these stickers and it inspired me to make this derpy dino rock during lunch today! Not sure if I will do more of the series.
I was using this paper to wrap my nephews’ birthday gifts and though I should do some party animals to hide on New Year’s Day! (Which I did, then people in my rock group were looking for them and trying to trade for their favorite – funny!)
Yes, they all look like they are smoking cigars.
Snister sent me a pic of this adorable tea towel! Simple designs like this are really hard to copy because you have to get them just right. I made two of these rocks. The first one is bad and the second one is below.
And finally, these stupid glitter hearts. These were so cool in my head and just turned out meh. I made three more last night that are also meh. I got so mad at the black one below for never curing because I am impatient and would not let it dry between sealant coats (and also put too much glitter on it) and threw it in the woods.
And that’s all I can share for now, since I’ve been working on a bunch of gifts. Rocks! The present you didn’t know you wanted.
I am learning so much about rock painting. This week I learned that besides sealant, so people put varnish on their rock so it won’t scratch. When I hide mine I’ve been carrying them in a lunch bag with foam in between them so they don’t scratch each other! I ordered some varnish to try. I really love the natural look and the way the design pops on the matte rocks so we’ll see if the matte varnish does that.
Love your rocks!!! Your T Rex is awesome!
Thanks! I like how he turned out!
How many rocks do you paint on an average week? From these posts, it seems like you’re creating so many!! I’m so impressed. The cat hearts one makes my cat-loving heart go pitter-patter. 🙂
I have been painting for 5 and a half weeks and have made 182 rocks, so my average is 33. The ones that are similar like the cats in cups and dogs in PJs go fast! The detailed ones take hours, like the t-rex and that one I emailed you.
Aww thank you!!!! <3
“Threw it into the woods” – I can relate to that with a lot of craft projects, LOL. Your rocks are really fun and I think you have done a great job with all of them. And hey, rock gifts are original! Great idea!!
Hee hee. Does that remind you of any knitting projects?! 😉
Thank you!!! And yeah, they are definitely original!
These are all so great! I’m truly so impressed by your attention to detail and artistry. How long does it take you to paint a rock? And also, where do you get all of these rocks to paint??
Thank you! That t-rex one with the cat took about 1.5 hours and the other t-rex one took about 10 mins. The hardest part is waiting for the paint to dry to do outlining!
I love how much the rock painting has taken over your life LOL
I do too but I am also like… I need to get other things done. It’s kind of a perfect stay-at-home activity though!
Those all turned out amazing, even the hearts which I love! I can’t believe you threw that one in the woods, LMAO laughed out loud for real. I wonder if anyone will ever find it and wonder the story behind it..
Thank you! Ha, I just got so mad at it for never drying, when it was really my fault for not waiting long enough between coats. Hee hee. It will be found in 2000 years and they will wonder what it is!
The cats in coffee cups are the coolest. Although that cat riding the dinosaur is pretty silly/funny.
Thank you! The cat on the dino still makes me laugh! And you can’t tell from the picture but it was a big rock, probably 6″ across, so it was even funnier that it was so massive.
I love that I can send you pictures of cool rocks I see when I’m out (not that I’ve seen any since the chicken one), instead of just saying “Hey, look at that.” I’m catching up on your blog now, and you’ve already done so many rocks since these. I love your enthusiasm for this new hobby and activity. It’s so cool!
Yes, please send them! Or anything you see that would be cool on a rock! Thanks! I am really getting a lot of joy out of it. I hope I stick with it!
