Today is my fourteen year anniversary – I’ve been running consistently since November 10th, 2006 – my second senior year of college. I started a program similar to Couch to 5K so Steven and I could run a 5K on New Year’s Day 2007.
Ha! “Maybe even longer than 5K!”
Someone recently told me they assumed I’ve been running since high school, and that I ran on the track team. I did not! I wish I had. I ran sporadically. I played high school and competitive soccer (some years, not all) but never understood I should stay conditioned year round. I was just talking to Dad about that yesterday – if only I had the knowledge now that I do about exercise and nutrition (not that I follow it, ha) back then! I mean, I still would have been a horrible soccer player, but the first week back at practice would not have felt like hell. Why didn’t our coaches or ANYONE teach us about exercise and nutrition? Huh.
I did not celebrate today by running, oops. I am up to running every other day, and ran yesterday, so today was a walk day!
From today’s walk
I’ve always been grateful to have running as a hobby, but especially this year! It gave me such a sense of entertainment and fulfillment during this pandemic. And as I get older and creakier, I am even more grateful for every mile I can run!
Happy Runniversary!! How many miles have you run in the last 14 years?
Thank you! I’ve run 18,212.15 miles since I started tracking in 2010. Probably that plus about 400 would be how much I’ve run in 14 years!
Congratulations on 14 years!! Until I read some time ago, I also thought you’d been running since high school. I think that goes to show what a dedicated, natural runner you are. π
And I had to laugh at the “maybe even longer than a 5K” because I think I said the same thing after my first 5K…it hooks you, doesn’t it?
Aww, thanks! <3
Yes! It does! And even when you have an awful race, you want another one to redeem it. LOL.
Happy runniversary! Do you start every day with an early morning run or walk? I am impressed! I am soooo lazy in the mornings, oof.
Thank you! In the days we have an early sunrise, yes (so late spring and summer, and right now). Otherwise, I go after work when it’s light out! I usually start work at 6:30 am so I am used to getting up then, but I sleep in when my body tells me to (like today!).
Congratulations! I also started running in 2006, but I am not sure of the exact day since I only started blogging in 2007…
Oh cool! Do you remember why you started or if it was to train for something?
It was to train to run the Disney half with my sisters and mom for her 65th birthday…I was so freaked out about running something so long…
So I bet you could figure it out backtracking from them! I remember being so freaked out for our first half! We had no idea what we were doing – we mostly rain on our treadmill, and rarely ran outside, even though we had a Garmin. We somehow ran a sub 2:00 though (probably cause we were young and light, ha).
Indeed! And we were so gloriously naive! I love what you wrote about maybe doing something maybe even longer than a 5K! It felt like a world of possibilities opened up after that first 5K, didn’t it? π
Happy (belated) runniversary! I wish I could remember when I started running. It might have been June 6, 2011? I know it was June 2011, and based on my blogging it looks like June 27 was the start of week 4 of Couch-to-5K for me. So June 6 is probably pretty close. Couch-to-5K is clearly a dangerous program – look what it did to us! π
Now you can celebrate 10 years this June! π It is dangerous! Look at what it’s made us do! π
Happy runniversary! I never thought of this, but what a cool idea! I know – I played field hockey in HS and could never ever walk the first week of practice. What the heck were they thinking? the one year I ran and swam in the off season was my best. Duh. Also… I just realized I’ve been running consistently since 2001. Huh. I’m old. π
Exactly! Why didn’t they tell us to condition year round? Did you make the connection when you swam in the off season?
19 years! That is awesome!!!
That is amazing. I’ve played sports all my life but I wish I’d taken up running sooner. I’ve been running (as a sport LOL) for 6 years and I regret the years that I’ve “lost”.
Congratulations for being so persistent. It’s really a great sport that we’ll be able to sustain well into high age.
Yeah, me too. I lived in Rome for a while and wished I would have been a runner then. I regret all the places I could have run! Sigh. We will have to make our future years count!
Thank you!
