I mistakenly ordered bread when we did not need a loaf, so we’ve been eating quite a few sandwiches lately! Steven always cuts his sandwich in half, either diagonally or vertically depending on the type of sandwich. I NEVER want mine cut in half.
The internets says most chefs prefer the diagonal cut because there is less of a risk of losing ingredients, it makes it appear to have less crust, it’s visually appealing (although vertical cut can be even more visually appealing for the ingredients), and it can help with eating a more challenging, crusty bread. I have also heard if you have a beard, it’s easier to eat a sandwich that’s cut (and the same goes for a burger).
But I just never want mine cut! I like holding a big ole sandwich in my hand and making a huge mess on my face and hands trying to eat it. And most often, I feel like I lose more ingredients if it’s cut.
So tell, me, do you prefer your sandwich cut, and how? Answer my poll below (for the cut you use the most often – I know it’s different per type of sandwich!).

Ha, I need to do another poll about my other sandwich opinion… that they’re depressing to have for dinner, but we’ll save that topic for another day!
Haha sandwiches ARE depressing for dinner. If we have them for dinner I’ll grill them for paninis. Otherwise they’re definitely a lunch (and breakfast) food.
I hate getting stuff on my face or hands when I eat so that’s probably why I prefer a cut sandwich.
Yes yes yes! I agree 100%! A cold sandwich for dinner? No!!!
That makes so much sense. And is why I have to get up and wash my hands right after I’ve eaten a lot of the times. Ha.
FWIW, Terry hates when I cut his sandwiches. Like you, he has no problem getting messy while eating. I’m not surprised one bit that you two have similar stances on this (or that Steven and I do)!
I think Terry might be my food soulmate, since he also does not like red sauce on his pizza. I wonder what other things we are both picky about π
Iβm with Steven on this one. Although I donβt have a beard last time I checked. But then it has been a long time between hair appointments. LOL. I normally cut mine in between horizontal and diagonal. Is that called diagzontal or horizgonal? π. If it is a burger, I cut it vertically, same with a BLT.
Buah ha ha Denise! There are some hairy genes in our family π LOLOLOL.
Ahh, good question, I like horizgonal! But both are fun!
I have never once thought about this. I think that needs to be an option in your poll. I typically cut a sandwich myself only if I think it will be super messy to hold or if I don’t think I can eat the entire thing. Other than that, I’ve never considered if I prefer it or not.
You will have to pay attention now to which way you like best when you’re eating one!!! π
If I’m buying a sandwich somewhere, I prefer to have it cut just for ease of eating. But if I’m making a sandwich at home, I’m too lazy to cut it and will just eat it as is π
Ha! Very specific! I like π It is so much easier to have a professional cut it – when I do it goes everywhere. That may be a comment on my sandwich making skills and my knife quality!
I like them cut – it feels like more bang for my sandwich buck. I know it’s the same amount but food is mental for me, LOL. And I like a nice sandwich for dinner every once in while, with chips. It’s like a picnic for dinner, with very little clean up. π
Ha! That is funny because my brain is the opposite – I want one big thing not two smaller things!
Aww, well when you put it that way it sounds fun! π
I don’t really have strong feelings on this, but if pressed, I would choose a diagonally cut sandwich. It really has nothing to do with sandwich eatability and more that I think sandwiches cut diagonally are more fun than sandwiches that are not. That being said, I rarely eat sandwiches, and when I do eat sandwiches, they tend to be subs, so this isn’t really something I deal with all that often.
However, I STRONGLY agree that sandwiches for dinner are extremely sad! It’s actually really funny that you mentioned that, because literally yesterday I was reading a blog post where someone recapped their meals, and they mentioned having a heartier meal for lunch and therefore having a light dinner, which made me think of when my parents would serve sandwiches for dinner sometimes growing up (regardless of how hearty lunch had been) and I always found it SO depressing. I want real food for dinner! Sandwiches are not real food! Though I guess as an adult I do get it, because sometimes you’re tired and busy and very much do not want to cook dinner, so making sandwiches (or rather, what my parents would do, which is put out sandwich fixings on plates — tomatoes, lettuce, meat, cheese, etc. — and then have us build our own) is a lot easier way to feed your family when you’re just not feeling cooking.
They look more fun? Or are more fun to eat? I was thinking this about subs too – I don’t like it when they cut my sub in half either.
I love that you were thinking about that already! I would rather have a light lunch and a heartier dinner, even though it doesn’t make sense, since I will go to bed in a little bit. But I want my dinner heated up! That is why I could never be a raw vegan. Just, no. I want warm/hot food! Your parent’s sandwich bar sounds fun… for lunch π And I totally get that being easier than a meal, especially if kids can build their own and eat what they like! But no.
Totally depends on the sandwich! Usually, yes, though, right down the middle. Or if it is square bread, diagonally can be really nice. But sometimes not at all. I’m sorry I can’t explain better – I guess this is a case by case situation for me. π
I always cut my sandwiches! I guess eating a whole sandwich is just harder?? And I had messiness when I’m eating, so I like to keep things nice and tidy. π
I cut my sandwich for no other reason than habit. I donβt think it helps do anything other than make it less unwieldy if itβs a huge sandwich.
