- We finally found five cups of basil (at Woodman’s) and were able to make the spaghetti con pesto alla trapanese recipe from From Scratch. Yum! I liked it! Next time we make it, we’ll soak the slivered almonds overnight to see if that makes the sauce smoother.
- I put this goofy sign up in our downstairs bathroom on Saturday and Steven still hasn’t said anything about it. Hmm, maybe he hasn’t noticed it?
- I just had a major revelation about my travel preparation anxiety. I always thought it was about forgetting to pack or do something before we leave – I have nightmares about forgetting things, and the anxiety always goes away when we depart the house. But I realized, it’s actually about TIME and worrying I will get everything done before we go, and not feel rushed and still get enough sleep. It’s the same anxiety I have at work – worrying that I have enough time to get everything done and not feel like a mad woman. Now that I know it’s not about forgetting things (I rarely do) or forgetting to do things, I wonder if I will chill out more… I tell myself over and over, “you have enough time, Kim!”
- I finished Dark Matter and started Ask Again, Yes. I’m only a few pages in, but the detail in the writing reminds me of Little Fires Everywhere.

That sauce sounds really good! And soaking the nuts is a good idea to make it smoother. Something I do with sauces like that is sautee my garlic before adding it – something about raw garlic is kind of harsh in a pesto sauce I find.
I can relate to your time anxiety – I have a similar thing. I often tell myself “You have plenty of time” when I am stressing out about not having enough time to do everything…
Ahh, that is a good idea with the garlic! I wonder if that would make our “ricotta” we use for lasagna even better!
Ha, we are so similar! Have you found anything that’s helped besides the self talk? I also remind myself that I’ve gotten all I need to get done in the past and can do it again!
My mother used to make homemade pesto when we were growing up, but that was in California where you could grow basil easily. Hers was the best, but I’m fine with buying store-bought pesto now because you need so much basil to do it right. I’m glad you sauce turned out so well – definitely makes all of the effort worth it, right?
Ooo, how did she make it? Using a traditional recipe?
It totally made it worth it! Well, made FINDING the basil worth it. It was an easy sauce to make!
I think that sign is my review of your bathroom. I got a really funny one for our powder room too. I’ll send you a picture of it.
That is so funny that they had the sign you got at the same shop I got this one!
Cackling at the bathroom sign. Love it!
That’s a great revelation about your travel anxiety! Maybe writing down a schedule for everything you need to do leading up to leaving the house can help. I’m just always worried I’ve forgotten something super important. I try to remind myself the only important things I need are my phone and my passport (if leaving the country). I can figure out anything else!
I picked Ask Again Yes for Book of the Month recently, but no idea when I’m going to get around to reading it. I’m interested about your review!
Thanks 🙂
That is a good idea with the schedule. I try to do something similar now where I take off time before the trip and get all the things done I need to do but I wonder if having more of it planned out would help. And yes – that is usually all we need! On this trip, I was gonna be screwed if I forgot my bike shoes and bike (since we were doing an organized ride) but I remembered those 😉
I am really enjoying Ask Again Yes so far. The detail in it is amazing. The characters are so developed! It’s REALLY good!!!
That bathroom sign is hilarious, and even funnier that he hasn’t noticed it yet! I need to find one, because that is right up the alley of my family’s humor 🙂
I think it’s a common sign to find on etsy! I was telling people about it and they had seen it there! 🙂
Harrison laughed at your bathroom sign! Has Steven noticed it yet?
The pesto looks so good and creamy. It’s such a good summer meal! Could you grow basil in a pot or in your yard?
He hadn’t! But now he has since he read this 😉
I could totally do that. I really wonder how fast it would take one plant to yield 5 cups though?! I guess I won’t know unless I try!
