Today is Global Running Day! Go celebrate, however you see fit!
But after that, it’s time to focus. There’s a much more important made-up holiday around the corner. That’s right folks – this Friday June 7th is National Doughnut Day! Don’t let your running enthusiasm linger so long that you forget to plan out your Friday donut consumption schedule. THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS.
A photo from our latest donut excursion (I tend to spell it “donut” but it looks like the spelling of the official day is “doughnut”)
Ha ha ha.
Now let’s talk about french fries.
In my mind, Global Running Day was associated with National French Fry Day, because I often went out to eat french fries, instead of running, on Global Running Day. I actually said to Steven last weekend “Global Running Day is next week! But you know what equally, if notΒ more important holiday is the same week?! National French Fry Day!”
This is false news, folks. National French Fry Day is July 13th. I was a few weeks off with that one.
But Steven and I started talking about french fries and what place we think has the best fries. I could think of a lot of places that had mediocre fries (which I would still eat, of course) and decided that the fries I like best are Arby’s curly fries. Delish. I love me a spicy fry. And they have the perfect soft to crispy ratio.
But I feel like this is something I should look in to more closely. I’m going to be a more conscious french fry consumer and judge from now on, so I can truly pick my FAVORITE french fry.
Shortly after we had that discussion, Steven came across an article* (pdf here) rating french fries from eight chains, based on a 1-to-5 scale in the following categories: crispiness, flavor, mouthfeel, and salt. The winner left me SHOOK. CRINKLE CUT FRIES? WHUT?! NO. (But actually, I need to try them and see if they’re as good as the author thinks!)
And you guessed it, a poll! Tell me which fries are your favorite from the list in the article, or, select “other” and tell me in the comments which place they so rudely neglected to include!

*Ha, the timing of the article still made me think National French Fry Day was this week. I thought it was until I looked it up to write this post! THE LIES WE TELL OURSELVES, FOLKS!
I love running. I love doughnuts. And I think it was live at first site with those fries!!!!
So you love running, doughnuts, AND fries?!?!?! <3
Yes, my heart is filled with love! Fur-babies are in there too π
Out of the options in the article, I would choose Arby’s too. I love seasoned curly fries!
Not running today, but swimming instead….something I haven’t done in a really long time. I guess some exercise is better than nothing.
And, if you feel like fries, we could always do family dinner at El Famous!!
They’re so good!
I hope you have a nice swim! Of course exercise is better than no exercise, lol.
Yum, El Famous! I will let you know. Our week got kind of nuts.
I chose Five Guys, but have never had Shake Shack and have heard their food is amazeballs.
I think we are getting one here, maybe? Was Five Guys the one you got when you visited here in Oct?
Yep! They have very authentic fries, cut from a potato daily. They have a sign when you walk in that says where that days potatoes are from! π Yummy! Will doesn’t like them (or their burgers), yet somehow eats mine when I get it….
Sounds like how he doesn’t like cream soda…
-.- very much so.
I’m confused. Which one is the made-up holiday?
A new donut shop opened a couple doors down from Burn this morning, so I celebrated National Donut Day a little early. π
Are you going to start a quest to find the perfect french fry? Or is that too much to manage with your vegan donut goal?
They’re all made up! Even the “real” ones! (But I am saying these “fill-in-the-blank” day holidays are made-up)
Oh fun! How was it?
Definitely too much to manage. Ha ha ha.
Lol I know they’re all fake – I was just joking. But seriously, fries and donuts should be celebrated.
The donuts were good! They have an actual menu but make everything to order, so you can build your own donut too.
I don’t actually like regular fries that much (sorry, can we still be friends?). But I LOVE sweet potato fries. The only regular fries I can’t get enough of are from local place called Duck Fat that fries them in actual duck fat. And serves them with truffle ketchup. And milkshakes. Yum.
We can still be friends π Where are your fave sweet potato fries from?
Those sound intense!!!!!!!
I love Arby’s curly fries! I haven’t thought of them in forever, I’ll have to see if we have one around here.
Fingers crossed that you do!
CHICK-FIL-A FRIES FOR LIFE. I WILL FIGHT ANYONE ON THIS. BRING IT.
My favorite mini donut place closed down a few months ago (lots of drama as to why, too! I need someone to do an investigative podcast series about it, plz.) I’m reallllllly picky about my donuts (no Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’s for me, NO THANK YOU) so now I need to find a new donut place. The travesty!
Ha! What do you love about them? I’ve never been! (We do have them here now)
What makes you think there is dramz? Like personnel or their lease or what? How sad that you have to find a new fave place. EXCEPT YOU GET TO TRY LOTS OF DONUTS!!!!!
The first year I was a runner, I was so excited to run on National Running Day. I felt like I belonged, like I really was a runner. And then I ran on all the subsequent running days (Global, what?? It’s grown!) if my body let me. Not this year, although I’m going to see if I can manage to walk a couple laps around my court and see if I can earn the Garmin badge for today.
Did you get that badge? I was surprised to see it!
I’m also surprised that it’s now Global, not National, as well!
I did get the badge. But when my friend and I were looking at our badges on Garmin Connect, we didn’t see the big ones, like my half marathon badge and her marathon (and half) badge. Then we looked at our PR’s and they are only showing 2019 PR’s. My half PR was erased! We looked into it via Google and apparently Garmin changed how you earn badges last spring and erased everyone’s distance badges!!! And PR’s!!! As you might imagine, this was pretty upsetting to me considering I don’t know if I’ll ever get to run again, much less run a half. And I know I have my own records of my halfs and PR’s, but to not see it listed as an achievement hurts. π
Wow! WTF! Why the hell did they do that and not just give you whatever the new badge was for the non 2019 stuff? What a dumb move. I’m sorry. That’s upsetting π (I was wondering why my stuff disappeared – thanks for sharing that)
I love a hand-cut french fry and thus, Five Guys was the winner for me. Of those on the list Dairy Queen and Burger King are definitely the worst. And am I the only person on Earth that thinks Shake Shack is overrated? I would truly just rather have McDonald’s!
Hand-cut french fries can be SO. GOOD. DQ and BK don’t have much of a taste to them, right?
I feel like I heard someone else say that about Shake Shack burgers recently! I’ve never been so I don’t have an opinion on them (yet)!
From that list I chose Arby’s. I also love Checker’s fries! I’m not really a fan of shake shack fries. I’d rather get a burger and shake and skip the fries there. BK’s older style fries were really good but then they changed them a few years ago.
I remember when BK redid their fries when I was a kid and gave them out for free and people were going nuts for them! I didn’t know they changed them since!
I’m having a very hard time choosing between Arby’s and McDonald’s. I feel like it’s kind of apples and oranges?? Like, curly fries are just in a different category than regular fries, but I like both of them so much!
I didn’t run on Global Running Day, but I *did* celebrate National Donut Day today by finally using it as an excuse to get a donut for breakfast π I run all the time – I don’t need an excuse to run. But this was the justification I needed to spend money on a donut, so I happily celebrated π
Yeah, I felt that way about this list too. Spiced curly fries are VERY different than salted fries!
Awesome! And I like your justification π
Okay, I’m sad to admit this, but I’m not sure I know the difference between all the fries in your poll. Now, I’ll have to go check it out. In my mind, McDonald’s fries are really delicious, but I remember reading some clickbait-y article about how they’re only good within the first, like, X minutes, so now I think that if I ate them, I’d actually be disappointed.
I think steak fries are my least favorite. I think Wendy’s shape is probably my favorite, followed by Chik-Fil-A, but I haven’t eaten then in years.
Ha! It’s okay if you don’t know! I didn’t know all of them either!
I misread least favorite at first and was like “how are steak fries her fave?!” LOL, I’m a huge bland cooked potato, rawr!”
