We we’re watching Green Book yesterday and SPOILER ALERT I loved the scene when Dr Shirley plays with the blues band at The Orange Bird. He’s never played with them before and jumps right in and sounds great.
I know this is something accomplished musicians can do but it always impresses me. I learned to play an instrument by reading notes on a page, not by ear. And I know playing and learning by ear are something that one learns with practice, but like I said, wow.
So the thought popped in my head – what can I do on the fly? Not to that caliber, but what am I good at on the spot?
Here are two of the things I thought of:
1 Coming up with fitness class workouts
2. Talking to people/having a conversation (when I want to, ha!)
The first one surprises me because when I started teaching fitness classes I had to follow my write-up and rehearse it a ton! But I’ve been doing it for years now and it feels totally natural. I still write my workouts but more as a guideline and improvise a lot as I read the class. It’s fun! And cool, that something that once stressed me out so much is now easy!
What are you good at “on the fly”?
Making a meal from whatever is in the kitchen!
I admire that in musicians, too, but like you said I think it is totally down to lots of practice…which I definitely get in the kitchen, LOL!
Ooo, that is a really good skill to have!!!!
I bet musicians would be just as impressed with you π Hee hee!
As I learned last summer, I can speak in front of an audience on the fly!
Like you said, it comes down to practice and feeling comfortable doing that activity.
That’s a great skill to have! Can it be on any topic (that you vaguely know of, obviously ha ha)?
Yeah! Give me some notes or some basic info and I can talk for at least an hour π
That’s a good question! I’m not sure I can do anything really useful on the fly. I still have to look up recipes, even for things that I’ve made many times.
I’m not a good spontaneous speaker either. I definitely do much better if I’ve practiced; it makes me sound like I’m speaking naturally, but it’s all rehearsed!
I bet there is something! Like figuring out a knitting problem on the fly π
And I bet most speakers have to practice to sound good!
This is a really thought-provoking question! I’m very good at jumping into other people’s conversations wondering aloud what kind of bird they’re looking at on the fly, HAHAHA. I have zero interest engaging with strangers, unless birds come up. Then I’m more than happy to butt in uninvited. Ha.
Ha! Does this happen often?!
On the fly, I can put together a short film or short video. Over the last 10+ years of making snowy and scooter videos (which I do miss making them), i got good at doing the filming and putting together the story.
That is amazing! What software do you use?!
A good 10 years ago, I used iMovie. Then I used Final Cut Express. Today I use Final Cut Pro. Also, learning Adobe Premiere and DaVinci Resolve.
Cool! I have only ever played around with Premiere. Movie editing seems so daunting to me so I find it impressive π
