- My older brother’s birthday is on Monday, and I sent him this shirt, since he has so many barn cats… and the occasional opossum. (Kids crack me up – I showed a picture of the shirt to Declan and he said “That’s not a cat!!!” as if the designer made some sort of mistake. Ha ha ha.) (Also, I sent my brother a more serious gift too!)
- I’ve run past this structure on the Lakefront Trail many times and thought it was an odd shelter or something. Now I see it’s an art installation most appreciated when there’s snow on the ground!
- I finished Falling into Place on Monday and started The Fifth Season on Tuesday. It’s a science fantasy series (it’s book one of three) that my friend Amy recommended. From Wikipedia: “The Fifth Season takes place on a planet with a single supercontinent called the Stillness. Every few centuries, its inhabitants endure what they call a “Fifth Season” of catastrophic climate change.” Society is very structured with “comms” (communities) and “use-castes” (instead of having a last name, your second name is your use/job. Your third name is your comm.). There’s people called “orogenes” with the ability to manipulate energy and cause (and prevent) earthquakes. The book begins with one orogene being super pissed and fracturing the entire continent from east to west. The book then follows the stories of three female orogenes from different time periods. The book has enough made-up words to warrant an index, but I’m doing a decent job of following along, and am enjoying reading it (very slowly)!
- This week’s been weird and I’m grateful tomorrow is Friday!

How funny, I’m reading the Fifth Season as well! A lot of people have highly recommended it to me. But it’s been taking me a while to get through it, I keep getting distracted with other books.
Oh that is funny! So you read a bit then read another book then come back to it? I am already wondering if I will be able to break from this book (when I finish it) to read others before I finish the trilogy.
Yes, that’s exactly it. I think I’m about halfway through the book and started more than a month ago. But I’ll see something else (easier) that I want to read, finish that, and come back to this book.
Ha, I get it, I totally do. I am taking my time with this read, and looking up things in the appendix, and some new words. The friend who recommended it told me she breezed too it too fast and missed some things, so I am trying not to!
So far, my fave story is Syenite’s, but I am just over 100 pages in. Which one is your fave?
I love hidden art like that – so very cool!
The shirt is epic. For the record, that’s all I would give my brother – nice gift, schmice gift…you got a cool t-shirt, bro! 😉
Me too! I had a huge “OH!” moment when I saw it!
Ha ha, glad you like it!!! I think you will appreciate that when I asked my bro if I could post the pic, he sent me a gif of John C Reilly enthusiastically saying “Yep!” from Stepbrothers. Ha ha ha. And you are right, I should have just given him this. Part of his gift was “garbage” I found on a run this year, so I felt like he should get something useful (a movie theater giftcard) lol.
oh I like the art installation. Keep trying with the 5th season it takes a while to get into – you’ve reminded me I need to find the next book!!
I am in to it! Just have to read it slow to make sure I understand all the “new” words, hee hee. So you read the first one and not the other two?
Oh wow, that’s really pretty! I’ve seen that structure plenty of times, too, but I guess I’ve never run past it when there’s snow on the ground and it’s sunny, because I never seen it look like that!
And running past it around 2:00 pm today, it’s definitely at its best more toward midday. I wonder if there’s any more like this around the city!
Ha ha! Love the shirt you got your brother! (And Declan’s remark about it – LOL!)
Very cool artwork – and only visible on sunny, snowy days…
My library has the book, The Fifth Season! So I will try and get it next time I’m there…and did you know (I only know this because I saw it when I looked up the book on the library website) the author grew up in Iowa City!
Declan cracked me up so much. Reminded me of the time I was telling my nephew about our black cat named Snow and I could see was like, “but… what?” Ha ha.
Oh cool! They finally have one I’ve mentioned! Ha ha. Oh that is neat that she grew up in Iowa! I need to read more about her!
Okay, that art installation is REALLY cool!
I’ve heard so much buzz about The Fifth Season but high fantasy isn’t my thing, so I don’t know if I’d ever get around to it. Interested to hear more of your thoughts on it!
I thought so too!
I am really liking the stories and the people in the book! The fantasy stuff is a bit to keep track of though!
Oh man, next year, you can get him an Opossum Society of America membership! I love that tee and am thinking of who I can get it for now…
Ha! I totally should! To whom are you going to gift it?!?!?
