Steven spends countless hours researching actual important things for the house – how to ventilate our attic and install insulation, how to clean up our pond, how to jack up the house and fix structural issues, etc., and I’m over here like:
“I’m going to research duck mating rituals”
Bob, Bertha and Bill having some, er, fun…
“I’m going to figure out why ducks become so territorial.”
So here’s Walt, just trying to get some food from the feeder, but Freddie is coming up from behind to chase him off. Freddie is so mean to the three mallards (Frank, Walt and Gus – Christina named them!).
“I need to research what all the trees are! Maybe the ones with thorns will turn out to be some sort of berry?!”
The perimeter of our yard is lined with thorny bushes. I spent some time Sunday cleaning up trash in that area (not sure if it was from the people who lived here before or bored teenagers when the place was vacant) and my back is all scratched up from thorns (note: I was wearing a tank top, ha ha).
“I wonder what all these native flowers are!”
One of many to identify… and this is actually a bloom on a tree.
“I need to find out why this salamander is so slimy looking!”
Not really, just wanted to gross you guys out. Ha ha.
Obviously, my interests lie in nature and animals! Now, should I search the internets, or use this as a reason to FINALLY get a library card?!
Awh I’m glad Frank, Walt and Gus are still coming around! 🙂 Can you really tell them apart?!
Not yet! I just pick a name and call them that 🙂 I am waiting to see them all together again (if Freddie allows it!) to see who is who and put it to memory!
So many important questions, and I LOVE that picture of the slimy salamander, haha. Other slimy things gross me out, but amphibians are okay.
I was running along the riverwalk in San Antonio once and saw some ducks in the middle of mating. It looked really violent and unpleasant for the female!
Yeah, he doesn’t bug me! But when I first found him, I thought it he was a huge fat worm! (that was before I saw his head… and legs)
Um, yes! I felt so bad for Bertha when those two were chasing her around the yard 🙁
Duck mating is scary! When we were kids, my sister and I thought this poor duck was being attacked by another duck and it really upset us – turns out they were mating!
I bet you can find out most of what you’re wondering about online…
That is exactly what it looks like! Yikes! (Although, I think most mating is that way in the wild?)

BLECH that salamander *shivers* Not my favorite kind of amphibian, that’s for sure!

They are. Then they ran off in to the woods… they are different than the ducks we normally see! I need to look up species. That’s probably in my bird book (which I just unpacked yesterday, yay!).
