Does 60 miles seem too far?
Not to us, apparently!
Ha ha, keep in mind, I am searching for vegan donuts. Which, according to the power of Google (which I am not quite sure I trust) means heading to Chicago or Milwaukee. And I will almost always choose driving to Milwaukee. Same distance, less stressful drive*, easier parking, work hasn’t ruined it for me, etc.
So our Sunday morning included a jaunt to Milwaukee for donuts (both of us) and coffee (Steven).
Holey Moley is the lobby of an office building (in the Third Ward district) and doesn’t have seating for one (or two) to consume a box of donuts, so we took them over to the the public market.
Hmm, I feel like one visit to the public market seems to… suffice for awhile? We were there in October, and the shops seemed to be offering the same things as then (and just like during my October trip, I picked up some beer soap (this time for my Grandma with her wash cloths) and had some delicious Egyptian rice again). So we didn’t stay for long but decided we should do something in Milwaukee since we were “all the way up there.” Ha ha.
So! Let’s go on a brewery tour!
Never mind that neither of us hardly drink beer! Ha!
The Lakefront Brewery Tour had awesome reviews on TripAdvisor and costs $8 a person for a 45-minute tour (which included four 6 oz drinks per person, and a complimentary glass at the end). Sounds like a good deal to me!
I went on my first brewery tour last June, to Boulevard Brewing Co, in Kansas City. And yes, even though I rarely drink alcohol (and not typically beer), I thought it was really interesting to learn how beer is made. But… I pretty much forgot most of what I learned then, so this tour was a good refresher. A kind of off-color, dirty-joke filled, refresher (which I liked, ha!). These brewery tour guides seem to really love their jobs (surprise, surprise). Which I think is awesome!
Probably not so awesome… that Steven had to finish almost all of my beer for me. (Wait. Why would that not be awesome?)

Err, at least I tried it? And kind of liked it? What can I say, I am a slooooooow beer drinker.
We both thought Lakefront had decent beer, which, since we don’t drink beer that often, probably means it’s not good at all (but correct me if I’m wrong!).
After our tour we had to fill our bellies with more food so we headed over to the Palomino Bar, which happens to have a few vegan things on the menu. After having chicken fried steak, vegan “eggs,” and vegan fried pie, we called our gastronomic tour of Milwaukee a day… and headed home. Where we made our own version of Egyptian rice for dinner.
Carbs, carbs and more carbs. This is going to be my new pre-long run/race meal!
Would you believe me if I said we both went to bed with a belly ache? Ha ha, well worth it, though!
*minus the oddity of the slow left-lane cruisers on the tri-state in Wisconsin.
Everything about this day sounds so fun (and delicious)! And there is no limit to how far I’d travel for donuts…no limit.

Hmmm, I am intrigued by vegan donuts, since I can’t really stomach the “regular” kind. I probably eat the equivalent of one donut a year. Too much lard, perhaps? Anyway I love Lakefront beer and really need to go on that brewery tour. 🙂
Lard?! It donuts?! Who puts lard in donuts? Yuck! Are you by a Do-Rite donuts in the city? They have vegan ones 🙂

If you like Boca burgers, there is a lot of way better vegan food out there that you may also enjoy! (I like them, too, there is just so much more)
No wonder you wanted us to join you – you needed professional beer drinkers! I’ve enjoyed the Lakefront beers that I’ve tried, especially their Eye-PA. Fixed Gear is another one I like too. Looks like you two had a nice date day!
I have a coworker who doesn’t like donuts except the ones made by the Amish in her hometown in Indiana. So she might travel slightly farther. Heehee. She has never brought me any though cause she claims they are only good on the day they are made! I think it’s a lie to keep them to herself!
Ha ha! Yeah, we needed some help! I didn’t feel very legit there… I needed someone to help me blend in! (I actually didn’t know we were going to go there – I thought we’d go to a museum or something, but Steven was like “no thanks,” ha ha).

I googled it and it looks very different from what we made! I wonder if the restaurant just made up that name for it!
There’s a place in West, TX that sells kolaches and it’s a must stop when you’re on 35 between Austin and Dallas. It’s one of those where the hype doesn’t come close.
My hubby and I went up to Milwaukee for our anniversary in November and we did the tour at Lakefront Brewery. It was a lot of fun! Glad you guys had fun on your short trip up north. 🙂
I can’t eat doughnuts (gluten) but if I could, I’d definitely drive 60 miles for them. They are one thing I really miss about being GF! Cool brewery too!
You could eat some of the donuts at this place – they have a gluten free menu 🙂
I’ve never heard of Lakefront Brewing so I can’t say if their stuff is any good. But if you liked it, that’s all that matters.
60 miles is a bit excessive to me if you’re going there every weekend or even every two to three weeks. But gas prices are down overall, so why not? 😉
Ha. Considering the last time I was in Milwaukee was in October… I think I am okay 🙂 I don’t like donuts THAT much 😉
I go to Kenosha on a somewhat regular basis for Cheese Castle goodness, and have been known to go to Ohio just to get chili and a certain kind of pop. So 60 miles is reasonable 🙂
Lakefront actually is good beer! In my opinion, at least. But I’d guess anything that non-beer drinkers enjoy actually would be good, since beer is an acquired taste.

Is this one of the breweries you toured when you were in MKE last year? I wondered that when I was there! And good to know it’s good beer. LOL.

Vegan donuts! I haven’t found any place around here that has any yet. Sounds like a great day to me, tummy ache and all lol next trip pop a probiotic maybe? and maybe you will get away all the mixture of those yummy delights 🙂
I had to look up for far Milwaukee was from you two, but I guess that’s not so far for donuts! My friends and I used to drive an hour home from college every Valentine’s Day to get donuts in Richmond, so similar. 🙂
I think brewery tours are interesting, even though I also don’t drink. And yeah, I always forget the different steps in the process; it’s very complicated!

Yeah, Milwaukee is actually a super easy drive from our place… it never feels far, until you are stuck behind some doucher in the left lane driving back. Where is my F&F car when I need it?!
Yeah! That is what it is! Oh gosh. It’s so good! We haven’t had it with the tomato sauce!
