Yay! My snister got all of her official wedding photos back! Now I can share a few more of the wedding details!
One of the traditions she incorporated in to the wedding was the four “somethings” – something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. And of course, I love how she chose to include it.
Let’s start with new! The dress, earrings and shoes were all new. And I think I only shared this in the comments before, but Christina actually WON her dress at a bridal show. Isn’t that awesome?!
For something old and something borrowed, she used some of our deceased grandfathers’ pins, to put in her bouquet, in remembrance of them. The “UNI” on top is for our paternal grandfather, who worked at the University of Northern Iowa, which is also where Christina and Will got their degrees (Christina already had this pin). The “R” on the bottom is for our maternal grandfather, whose last name began with an r (Christina borrowed this pin).
Seeing those really tugged at my heartstrings. And reminded me that I wanted to ask my maternal grandmother about having a certain token of my grandpa’s (she said she will keep an eye out for it, ha ha).
And if that didn’t get me, the something blue sure did! This one was a surprise – we didn’t know about it until Christina was putting her dress on!
So a bit of back story – our dad has something of a uniform – he always wears blue Dickies. That is what we have seen him wear probably, oh, 95% of our lives. In fact, he was going to wear that to Christina and Will’s rehearsal dinner. Ha ha ha! My mom stopped him.
People are so used to seeing him wear that outfit, that in 2002, to be funny in our holiday card, we all wore that, and had dad “dress” up. Ha ha.
So Christina had asked Mom for some fabric from dad’s “uniform” but Mom didn’t know what it was for. We found out on the wedding day:
Aww! Isn’t that perfect?! That really made me emotional!
And I have to add this photo of my dad at the wedding – that is pure happiness on his face!

I am trying to remember if I did the four “somethings,” and I am thinking, since I don’t remember… I probably didn’t! I do remember my paternal grandmother giving me this at my bridal shower:
Yeah, I definitely don’t remember having a sixpence in my shoe!

My something borrowed was part of a long family tradition though. My maternal grandmother kept the gold piece she wore in her shoe at her wedding and lent it to her daughters and granddaughters when they got married. Now that she has passed the oldest granddaughter ‘owns’ it and lends it to each granddaughter when they get married. It’s been worn as a necklace, a bracelet, pinned to a bouquet, pinned to the wedding dress on a chain, etc etc. I wore it as a bracelet. It’s cool to see how each of us incorporates it and it is so special having our grandma with us on that day.
My other something borrowed was my mom’s veil from her wedding. It was cool that it was preserved so well (inadvertently – it was in a plastic grocery bag for 25 years! haha) that I was able to wear it.
Writing all that just made me really happy. 🙂

I realized a few days before my wedding I was woefully unprepared in the “somethings” department – EVERYTHING I had was brand new, from the dress to the jewelry to the shoes! A friend’s mother had made me a lovely garter with a blue ribbon in it however, so I at least had something blue… but all I could muster up that was “old” was the underwear I wore 🙂 🙂 I think I fudged the “borrowed” one in some convoluted way – oh, I think maybe the extensions? I had some extensions clipped into my hair just to give a little more volume, so I said I was borrowing that hair from someone else. Clearly I did not put a lot of thought into it in advance 🙂 I LOVE the blue heart for your sister!
Ha ha ha, BUT! You still did it! My sister and I were joking that her extensions were “borrowed” 😉

The pins and heart were perfect! Such sweet touches. My something borrowed was my dear, deceased aunt’s wedding and engagement rings, which my uncle kindly lent me for a few hours so I could pin them inside my dress over my heart for the ceremony. It’s nice to include special mementos in big events like weddings. Happy Monday!

I don’t remember following that tradition in my wedding but maybe I did? Very cool that she did it in such a creative way.
What sweet ways of incorporating important people! I wore my grandmother’s 1920’s art deco ring for something old, for something new I had my dress, for something borrowed I rented my necklace, and for something blue my shoes were teal blue. We also did our guest gift in memory of my husband’s grandfather and my father who had passed- my dad’s kahlua recipe with Shakespeare quote tags (grandpa loved Shakespeare).
What a perfect guest gift! I bet people loved it! Do you remember some the quotes you used?

Before I get into the “something old, something new,” I have to say that is another amazing holiday card from the Ilax family.
Yes, I did do the “something old, something new” although I’m not sure I got it all covered. The dress was the something new, a pearl necklace that belonged to my mother was the something borrowed, my engagement ring (a sapphire) was the something blue, and then it kind of fell apart at the something old. Either my underwear was the something old, or the pearl necklace did double duty. I mean, who wears a bunch of old stuff for their wedding unless they are going vintage? It’s not like I had white satin shoes just sitting around…

I’m trying to remember what I did … my dress, veil and shoes were new. My necklace was my grandmother’s, so old and borrowed (but my mom gave it to me, so not really borrowed?) And the only blue I wore was the sapphire stone in my engagement ring, that’ll have to count.
