What kind of milk did you drink, growing up? And now?
Ha ha ha. I know! Soooo completely random. But I think it’s interesting to find out… we drank skim cow’s milk in our house as kids, so anything heavier than that always tasted extremely gross to me! But! I know that people who are used to 1%, 2%, or whole would think skim was n-a-s-t-y. Hee hee.Β
Now I drink vanilla almond milk in cereal, or bake with it or soy milk. I am not the type to drink a glass of milk. It’s not appealing to me, and it upsets my stomach (even though it’s not from an animal). Even eating a bowl of cereal with milk gives me an upset stomach. Bizarro! Luckily, I can have small amounts of it in smoothies, baked goods, chai lattes, etc. TMI. Ha ha.
Growing up was 2% cow milk, occasionally skim. Never whole. I don’t think I tasted whole until I was a teen.
As an adult before I switched to almond milk, I was doing skim. My husband got me to look into it and I found out the really weird/icky processing they do to skim and 1%/2% to cut out the fat and just – yuck! We switched to whole for the house and never looked back, until I realized that cutting dairy was a really good idea…so my daughter and I do almond milk. (My husband won’t make the switch though, he drinks whole.) My daughter prefers cow milk and will get it at other people’s houses though if she has the choice.
Ugh, I don’t even want to ask about the processing! Just thinking about how the big manufacturers treats the cows freaks me out.
Yeah it’s a really really cruel industry π I wish I could get dairy out of my house completely. Miles seems to be allergic so I’ve had to cut it out of my diet completely anyway.
ahhhh you drank the white water!! we drank 2% growing up, and that’s still what I buy. I love milk, but it does not love me anymore, so on my cereal is about it for me. As much as I enjoy a tall glass of cold milk, it rips me apart now if I try…
Ha ha! White water! I have never heard it called that π
I remember one of the last times I had cow milk before I became vegan was specifically so it would clear my system π
I drank whole milk growing up, but that was in a different era. Now I drink 1%, or occasionally 2%. I’ve tried soy milk and almond milk. Unfortunately, soy mimics estrogen, so it is best to avoid large amounts of it. Almond milk tasted good, initially. But tastes ‘thinner’ than cows milk, and lacks the calcium and especially the protein found in cows milk.
I wonder what the weird/icky process Heather was referring to – I’d like to learn.
I bet you could find a lot online about whatever process Heather is referring to π
We drank 2% cows milk growing up. I don’t think there was any other option in our house besides for mom would use whole milk in potato soup. I recently started having unsweetened almond milk with my cereal in the morning because it is lower calorie than cows milk. I’m working on a 1200 calorie diet and have been pretty successful.
Good for you! π Are you feeling pretty good at that diet?
Like everybody else we drank 2% or skim cow milk growing up. I’m not much of a milk drinker anymore, I occasionally have some plain unsweetened soy milk on cereal. My oldest son uses almond milk and the rest of the family uses cow milk. I also generally use unsweetened soy milk for baking/cooking – it works really well in bechamel sauce.
We drank “red milk” growing up. lol We always identified milk by the color of the lids… Whole milk was red milk, skim was pink milk, 1% blue, etc. haha
I drink almond and rice milk now.
Check your milk for carrageenan. If that’s listed as an ingredient, I’d bet a good deal of money that’s what’s causing your upset stomach!
Ha! Red milk!
I have yet to try rice milk. What’s it like?
Ahh, thanks for the hint with carrageenan!
We drank skim growing up and now I do unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I only ever use it in cereal or baking, so I love it that stays good so much longer than cows milk.
We normally drank 2% cow’s milk. However, we went through a period of time where my mom would buy powdered milk (I assume to save money), and make that, and that was the only milk we had in our house. It was SO GROSS and I avoided drinking it. If I could drink REAL milk at a friend’s house, it was the most amazing thing. Eventually she got over that experiment and went back to 2%.
As I got older, I found that I couldn’t stomach cow’s milk, so now I rarely drink cow’s milk unless I have a Lactaid pill. Most other dairy (coffee creamer, cheese, ice cream, etc) and milk in something that gets cooked doesn’t bother me. Sometimes I’ll drink soy or almond milk, but I don’t often buy it. Robert drinks milk and gets skim.
Also, I find it really interesting (in a bad way) how many adults can no longer stomach cow’s milk, yet the dairy lobby so aggressively pushes dairy (specifically cow’s milk) on us as if it’s something we truly need. Like the current Food Pyramid (now a plate with a glass for dairy) was heavily influenced by food lobbies. And don’t get me started on corn. Argh, politics.
I have never had powdered milk! But yeah, doesn’t sound too good.
Ha ha. Yeah, the milk pushing is funny. Not everyone produces lactase, the enzyme that processes milk, as adults… so, why drink it? Eh, but we eat all that other processed stuff we aren’t meant to eat π
True. At least cow’s milk is “real” food even if it isn’t meant for humans.
As a kid we would drink whole milk. Well, not drink it but use it with cereal and a licuado (shake). Then I switched to 2% and then 1%. Now I use almond milk. I get bloated when I use regular milk.
I’m with you about skim milk! We actually drank powdered skim milk for awhile. I never thought it was gross bc I didn’t know any different. Now we drink and bake with regular unsweetened almond milk.
We were a 2% house growing up. I think the first time I had whole milk I was grossed out. Although, I have ALWAYS hated to drink plain milk. It’s disgusting. When at someone’s house for dinner and the choices were water or milk I always chose water. I actually drank mostly juice as a kid because I hated milk so much. I’d use it on my cereal but drinking a glass of it was not going to happen.
We switched to skim at some point and then Jason and I did 1% for years. But in the past two years or so we’ve switched completely to unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I still won’t drink a glass of it but I use it in my oatmeal and on cereal.
We drank skim at my house growing up. My grandma lived on a dairy farm so I would have whole milk out of the bulk tank when we would visit her. I still drink skim milk occasionally but also drink almond milk. Matt still drinks 2% (and he still loves whole milk and probably would drink it all the time if he could). Once we discussed what kind of milk we were going to get when we lived together and then I bought 1% and tried to like it so we could compromise, but it’s weird. I like skim.
When I was little I drank 2% cow’s milk. My mom always bought skim for herself though so in high school I switched to skim (and my brother and dad switched to whole milk… but eventually switched back to 2%).
Joey is a bit lactose intolerant so we usually buy lactose-free milk. I like soy and almond milk but he prefers lactose-free cow’s milk so we get that. We don’t drink enough milk to purchase more than one kind at home though. If I get milk to take to work, I usually buy plain almond milk.
For years, I drank whole milk… Vitamin D. But then I got with my wife, she drank skim milk. I told her no way was I drinking that white colored water. LOL So we compromised at 1%. The last 3 years, she’s been more lactose intolerant so we switched to lactaid and other brands of milk like Horizon organic and that seems to help.
If it’s just me and I’m out to eat or grabbing a quick milk, I go 2% or whole milk.
