My name ended up being in the paper after all (27F, at the end)!
Steven and I headed to the marathon store in Central Park yesterday and I decided to pick up a paper even though they said only finishers under 4:30 would get in. I was really surprised to see my name! Gina shared this article with me about fitting names in the paper.
The marathon store was crazy! We waited in line outside of Central Park to get in to another line inside the park… to get in to the store. But I was very excited to pick up a few souvenirs for my spectators.
And you know what else was exciting? How many freaking people there were walking around wearing their medals! And not just around Central Park, but all over Manhattan (we got around quite a bit yesterday!). I wore my marathon shirt on Monday and my medal when I was in Central Park. People were congratulating me all day, everywhere. The city really does get pumped about the marathon! So very cool.
Do people in other cities wear their medals like that the day after? I even saw people wearing their medals today!
We’ve been going all over the last two days. Lots and lots of stairs. I have swollen feet, a sore right quad and a left heel that sometimes has stabbing pain. But other than that I am doing good. All this sightseeing is wearing me down, but the weather is perfect and we are having too much fun not to go out and about! So far we’ve seen the 9/11 memorial, been to SoHo, spent a ton of time in Times Square (did the CSI experience thing) walked up most of 5th Avenue north of Times Square to Central Park, and been in a lot of cool shops. And a ton of other stuff I am not mentioning. And there is still a ton of other stuff we want to do.
Maybe I will post some overall pictures of that stuff later if people are interested?
Also, guess who my sister met today, for reals! Do you know who this is?
I can’t believe Miss Twilight herself didn’t have some Twilight item with her for him to sign.
Ha ha. I am happy Will was able to find something for her 🙂
HEY! It was a spur of the moment thing butthead!!! I did have a Twilight comic and action figure back at the hotel, just not on me! ;D

Maybe because you live in the Chicago suburbs you didn’t notice, but last year the reason running Chicago DIDN’T feel special (at all), was that EVERYONE in the city either had their shirt on, or their medals, even the next day (or the day leading up to it, they had the shirts). It was like “I did it! And so did everyone else…” It didn’t make it seem like a big accomplishment when everyone else is doing it too.
That’s funny because I felt the exact opposite. I loved sharing the honor of finishing NYC with so many other people, especially since they were from all over the world, and it gave us opportunities to say “Hey, how did you do?!” and talk to someone I might normally not.
I’m like Leah@WhyDeprive? because I would be jealous to! lol and I am another nontwilighter here! lol.
Seriously NY just sounds like they do everything right. except the gazillion long walk after the finish line which seems to be everyone’s complaint but with almost 50k people they can’t have bottlenecks at the end I guess right?
They do almost everything right, in my eyes! My only complaint is that we didn’t have pacers, but oh well 🙂 I was prepared for the death march from reading about it on forums. I just wanted to see my spectators as soon as I finished! 🙂 I was so excited to see them!
I would love to see pictures and read more on your NYC adventures (you get my vote)!! It sounds like you are having a great time (wait, I know you are having a great time)!!! That’s so cool that the whole city gets behind the marathon!!

EVERYONE was wearing their medals around town on Monday. I’m not so sure how I feel about that, although after wearing mine for about an hour after the race, it felt really heavy and I needed to take it off…maybe I’m just weak. 🙂

I have no idea if people wore their medals around DC the day after because I wasn’t in the city for 4 days after the marathon. I did see a guy yesterday wearing the shirt though! I almost talked to him but I rarely talk to people I don’t know, even if we have something in common… I know, antisocial much?

oh wow!! i am SO BAD at spotting celebs (had to read the comments to figure out who that was, haha) and walk by them ALL THE TIME in nyc without realizing it. i find out 30 seconds later when whoever i’m with starts excitingly wanting to talk about whoever “we” just saw.
LOL! My friend Gina here is like that. Or at least, she was when we saw Robin Williams. I think my sister is the opposite. She keeps texting me about all of these celebrities she is seeing!

As for the medals, I saw people wearing them all over town after last year’s Chicago Marathon. I felt out of place not having one.
Awesome you made the paper! That is a keepsake. They post the runners in a 15k race I do and its always nice to find your name!

When we ran Disney we wore our medals around all day and lots of people congratulated us on them – it was great fun and the only time I’ve done that with a medal.

When I was in Orlando this past January for my mom’s marathon, people wore their medals everywhere. I saw them all around my hotel and anywhere I went, restaurants, stores, etc. It was really cool to see it all! And I know the runners get tickets to Disney (at leas they did last year) so I’m sure it’s even crazier & cool on “Marathon Monday” at Disney!
I love sporting my medal right after a race, but I’ve never seen other people do it. I think that is awesome and love the spirit! And way cool that your name was in the paper after all. 🙂

I think the walking was good. By day 3 the stairs were easy! I took the rest of the week off from running though. I haven’t taken this long of a break since last December!
