I saw this can (among many others) in Union Station this morning. They have probably been there for some time, I just didn’t notice them.
I think it’s really interesting the cans are called “Landfill Can” (and most are located by recycling cans). I wonder if this will make a difference? Will people be encourage to recycle when they see the dump truck image on the can?
Or are we just going to have huge landfills in the future, like in Idiocracy?
The Metra train I ride travels by a landfill each morning. On windy days the smell of the landfill breezes in to the train car. And makes me gag. What’s worse is that people live very close to this landfill. Can you imagine that?
I am not much of an environmentalist (I drive a car with not-so-good gas mileage) but I love the great outdoors and do what I can to avoid excess trash. Steven and I recycle as much as we can. And we would probably have a lot less garbage if we composted.
Are you big on recycling?
I am really hopeful that in the future, manufacturers will become smarter and more efficient with product packaging. It makes me crazy when I buy something (usually electronics) and it has 23098 plastic pieces in it, and my fingers get cut (plastic cut, like a paper cut) trying to open it.
I was just thinking about doing a post on recycling since our recycling is OUT OF CONTROL. Seriously, we have a mountain of stuff to put in the outdoor recycle bin just piled up in a corner of our kitchen. Just imagine if all that stuff went into the landfill!
Are you talking about the grayslake landfill? I am not even kidding when I say we almost bought a house right near there. For some reason it never smelled until one day. Thank goodness because we had no idea it was there until that day and would be living right near a landfill if we hadn’t gone to check out the house on the day it smelled bad.
We try but I always feel like we have way too much garbage. We recycle everything we can but kid stuff comes packaged in so many things it is ridiculous. And I hate plastic cuts! My hands are all cut up because of stuff like that and I am always embarrassed at lab class because I don’t want the other people in my group to see my gouged up hands!
Yeah, the one on 83, north of 176, south of 120? EWWW!
I was thinking about toy packaging when I wrote that too. I helped my nephew open some of his holiday gifts and the packaging was ridiculous!
I’ll bet most people don’t even take the time to read that landfill can let alone think about the implications. We are big on recycling here and compost as well.
I like the landfill can. We do recycle, but I have gotten in the habit of buying individual waters, teas, and colas, and I would like to change that so I’m more environmentally friendly. I don’t want there to be a ChezJulie landfill!
If I can recycle then I definitely do and once I move out of my parents house I want to get even more into it. It always bothers me when people throw recyclable things like bottles into the trash because it is SO easy to recycle them! If I can’t find a recycle bin to throw them into then I just hold onto them until I get home.
My mom and I recycle a lot. We recycle bottles, jars, papers, cans, and we’re trying to get into recycling cardboard boxes our food comes in. It just feels so good to recycle! I couldn’t imagine just throwing it all away when it can all be used again.
I’m not the best recycler, but I try!

Do people honestly look at the trashcans as they walk by? I imagine the recycling can is full of non-recyclables.
We’re getting a big recycling bin next month from the city. They’re cutting back to once-a-week garbage pickup and are trying to get people to recycle more.
I have totally failed in the recycling department for most of my life. I always recycle cans and most paper products, but plastics and cans I just throw out. Bad! Shame!!
In the last few weeks, I’ve been doing WAY better though and I’m hoping to reduce my medium size garbage can down to the small version.
AND I just finished building my worm bin and will be able to turn my food waste and most paper garbage into a wonderful garden fertilizer!
(p.s. Your gardening posts last year really inspired me and I am in a gardening class now to learn how to have a successful garden this year!!).
