For avocados…
My mom really likes avocados. And they are sometimes inexpensive where I live. So whenever I see them at a good price, I snap a picture with my phone and send it to her to tease her (so nice, I know).
I like avocados too – in the form of guacamole.
I sent this picture to my mom with the title “98Β’ Guacamole” (after buying two of the 49Β’ avocados). Such a brat.
We* came up with a pretty good guac recipe. It goes something like: scoop out and smash two avocados, mix in 1/2 tsp. lemon juice, 3/4 tsp. garlic power, 1/2 tsp. onion powder, 3/8 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. oregano… chill (if you want). Nom away.
Anyway, now that I have seen how low avocado prices go, I don’t really buy them when they are over $1 each (and it’s not like I buy them every shopping trip, anyway). I am an avocado bargain shopper.
There are a few other things I only buy when the price is right too – like pineapple (not in a can, the actual funky looking fruit) and pears. And apples. And toilet paper.**
Are you a bargain shopper? Do you pay attention to the price when you shop for groceries?
I used to not pay attention very closely, but I sure do now!

**Just kidding
My daughter LOVES avacados. She’s eaten one a week since she was 6 months old. Some months Wallmart has them for 10c each. !! In the Fall, they were $2 each, yikes. Right now they are 50c, and delish. I like them because she doesn’t need to dirty a bowl. She just eats it with a spoon.
This is why I need to move somewhere warmer – cheaper avocados! 10c?!?!?!
Oh my heavens – I LOVE AVOCADOS! I have had to stop eating dairy, and I use avocado to replace the creaminess of cheese and dips that I can no longer eat. YUM!
I am definitely a bargain shopper – not really for avocados because I eat them pretty regularly. But, I stock up on certain things when they go on sale. And, I just started shopping at outlet stores, which has been fun. $130 pair of boots for $20? Yes, please! π
I love avocados and guac, too. So tasty.
I’m a bargain shopper, but I’m not cheap. I’d pick the better avocados even if they were a bit more. Unless I was making LOTS of guacamole, then I would go for the 10 best 49 cent avocados to stretch the value.
I pay attention to price when Im grocery shopping, but sadly, it doesnt help me save any money. I have a major problem when it comes to buying a reasonable amount of groceries. I just cant control myself.
I never buy avocados! I don’t even know how much they are at the store here! I will have to look next time I go! I have a good recipe for guacamole from my future sister in law but I have yet to make without her help!
I’m not a bargain shopper at all. π I order from Peapod, and tend to just get the same items over and over again. Although sometimes if something I really like is on sale, I’ll stock up!
I got the Hungry Girl “200 under 200” book for Christmas, and they have a guac recipe in there that includes peas. I am really anxious to try it!
I love their avocados and we make guac with them too. Hot stuff. You might like it!
What recipe do you use?
Yum! I’m definitely a bargain shopper and actually enjoy clipping coupons and scouting out good deals. I splurge where it’s important — organic, for sure! — but tend to otherwise be fairly frugal.
Love guacamole. I do shop for produce seasonally, because some things are prohibitively expensive otherwise. Namely asparagus, berries, cherries, and grapes.
I’m definitely a bargain shopper! Alot of what I eat are things that I know are cheaper one place or the other. Or it’s whatever is on sale for the week…
I try my hardest to look for deals at the grocery store but since I hate going to more than one store sometimes I just put up with the exorbitant Jewel prices. However, when they have their buy one get one sales on things I buy a lot I stock up!
I’m a bargain shopper for all (ok, a bunch) of my food. Sometimes I’ll have a general list of things I want to get at the store, but it’s always influenced by what’s on sale.
[I had to get my receipt from today to look, because now I have to know…] I got 18/26 items at a discounted price, and 30 cents off for bringing my own bags. I think that’s pretty good. And yes, I do tend to have a general idea of what most things cost at the store now, which makes me feel like a smartie pants. π
Instead of buying on sale, we try to shop at ALDI, where everything is cheap (we do wait for soap, paper towels and a few other things to do on sale).
What do you like to freeze? I haven’t done that.
oh, and I totally buy a ton of something if it’s on a great sale and I can freeze it. I feel other people might not do that much? I love it though.
I love avocados so much! And those are some great looking prices! Here they are about $1.70 for one, so I unfortunatly have put my avococado addiction on hold π
I’m so jealous of your cheap avocados! Ours sometimes go on sale for $1.50 each. But I love guac too. I add a minced chipotle in adobo sauce for some smoky heat.
We have an Aldi now here… wonder if they have inexpensive avocados…. must check.
loooooooove guac! Just made some myself, but I took the short cut version and used a mix, but I shall steal your recipe to try! I’m glad you posted it!
There is an Aldi in upstate New York that we would check out when we visited my brother in college.
Avocados are a FRUIT. They’re supposed to be eaten mixed with sugar or on a shake with milk and sugar!!!
Plus the avocados here are TINY. In Brazil they are the size of my hand, and no, not my fist, my hand, fingers and all (basically they tend to be bigger than a mango).
I love avocadoes. They used to be 2 Weight Watcher points even if you ate the whole thing so I ate a lot of them. The rules are different now so I eat them less often, but I still love them.
I love guacamole, otherwise I don’t really know what to do with avocados! I can’t imagine they are really popular here anyway…haha!
