Awhile ago, I mentioned that the Lake County Forest Preserve is building a 2.5 mile trail that starts in our neighborhood!
I am totally geeking out about this. I watch for progress every day, and show it to anyone who comes to visit us.
This photo is in our neighborhood, behind a row of houses (those houses are in a prime area for people watching, once the trail is done!). They have cut down some trees here, and smoothed out space for the trail.
And these two photos are from where the trail will end, at a frisbee golf course.
I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS DONE!
Will we still live there when it’s done (next fall) though? We’ll see!
Last week I was talking to a friend who is moving to the Twin Cities. She was telling me about all the trails they have there. I told her that if I ever move, a good trail system will be my number one priority!
How did you decide where to live? Do you have plans to move in the future? What would be on your priority list for a new area if you were moving?
We live where we do because Steven used to work near here. Eventually, we will move closer to the city to cut back on my commute. I will miss our home though. I love it.
I could see us moving to a different state in the future too. Some day, far away…
How about a different country, Kim? We are pretty much permanent here in Belgium because of my husband’s job (he is a civil servant in the EU administration). My kids have never known another house! When I was a kid we moved 8 times for my dad’s job – it seemed so normal. Now it seems weird to me that I have lived in the same city for the past 21 years. The longest I lived anywhere as a kid was in Geneva IL for 8 years – luckily through middle and high school, they have good schools there.
I would love to live overseas again someday. I kind of have opportunities like that at work!
Lucky you have that new trail! It looks pretty flat too which is nice. We have tons of trails here but they are hilly and in the woods with lots of roots that can cause me to fall.
I’m excited for your trail too! We have a disc golf course relatively close to my apartment (not walking distance though).. I would totally take my couple discs and run on that trail, do the disc course and then run home. 🙂
I am hoping to get the nerve to buy a house in the nearish future and move! I would stay in the same town I’m currently living in though. As far as suburbs go, I like it here and it has some nice lake trails nearby. Plus the commute isn’t horrible and I’m used to it. I just need to get the nerve to start officially looking for a house!
What is holding you back from looking?

I kind of am living where I am by default :p but I really need to start thinking about where I WANT to be, because once I graduate I am SO going to have to salvage my sanity and move. I probably won’t go too far, though… I’ve been spoiled by convenience. 😉

When I moved back to Illinois, I knew that I wanted to live by Lifetime so that was my priority.
When we moved in July, a big part of the decision was that it put us right on a trail. Indy is blessed with a lot of them…thank goodness! That will be a big factor when we move again if we stay in Indy, but at the moment, we’re batting around the idea of moving to Chicago when our lease is up…depending on whether Tom’s company transfers him up here.
I didn’t know Indy had a lot of trails! Are there some cool state parks too? I would love to come check it out some time.

The Monon Trail is the one that runs by my house and that I posted the pictures from a couple weeks ago. Eagle Creek Park has the most non-paved trails I know of, but there are probably more in some of the other parks.

With 4 kids, my priority lately has been schools and location in relation to work. We moved where we are 7 years ago for those reasons. And with the housing market the way it is, we’ll be here for a long long time…

Love new trails! I moved to Chicago for college and stayed around. Couldn’t wait to get out of Ohio. Now I want to move back. I’m ready to get out of the city (even though I love it here) and have a more relaxed way of living close to my family. The major priority is living by an airport so both my husband and I can do our jobs.
Are you guys looking at places in Ohio?
When I go to uni next year I’ll most likely be living right in Vancouver.. which will be interesting because I’ve never lived in the city before. The closest I got was Langley. When I eventually make a decision as to where to live and I don’t have to worry about school, I’ll probably also pick a place that has good places to run. Until then I guess I just have to deal.
I’d like to think that I’m flexible as to location but I know that one of my priorities is to be close to a grocery store. I couldn’t deal if it took me 30 minutes or more to go grocery shopping! Although last night I was missing my old running route. It wasn’t on a trail but it had minimal traffic. Sometimes I’m just so tired of watching out for cars!
we have so many good trails around here and i am SO BAD about taking advantage of them!! but i do now have a 2nd hand bike, so once i bring it in to get a little fixed up maybe i can start seeing the trails on bike..
I moved to Seattle for a more urban lifestyle and to be closer to my sister/nephew. I love that it has lots of outdoorsy stuff and a rich culture- so much music, art, theater, festivals, etc. I don’t foresee moving from here.
We might move in the future. My priorities would be a great job, a place with some culture (bookstores, concerts, coffeehouses, etc.), and not freezing cold for six months out of the year.
The PT actually said to do the elliptical and bike and ease back into the running. I am going to try and bike and see if that feels better than the elliptical.

We live in the city because we both work here; we’re near a ravine that has some trails and a big dog park which is nice but trails anywhere within the city are 2k long and always packed.
I love running on country roads, so running at the cottage is a dream for me…I would love to live in ther country, but it’s not really viable right now.
What’s a frisbee golf course?
I think I would always have to leave somewhat close to a (major) city.

Very cool! (the trails)
I imagine some day I might move (god knows my parents would love for me to move to Ohio), but I can’t imagine where on earth it would be. I love the city because of the culture, the convenience…and I cannot fathom ever living somewhere where I actually had to drive to get around! (as you know, Chicago has its annoyances too, but overall the good still outweighs the bad for me!)
We are talking about moving, depending on if/when Tavo gets accepted to a PhD program. We’re looking at Chicago, Illinois or Austin, Texas (right now – but, who knows. I’ve been in Seattle my whole life, and I don’t care where we move – I’d be happy to try anything new! New culture, new people, new experiences, new influences! We’re also talking about Portland. Tavo and I are both city people, and for right now, we’re looking at houses in urban neighborhoods; he may end up at the UW. 🙂
I love how much you’re dorking out over the trail – I’d do the same thing. In fact, that’s how I got all of the cuts on my leg 2 weeks ago… ha!
The place I’m in now had a specific draw for me, bc it’s only about 1.5 miles from 3 different trail systems. Love it.
Family and work brought us to where we are now…but we’ve lived in another country and another province…I enjoyed every place I’ve lived, each for different reasons.
BTW, about the marathon…I hurt my knee during my last half and then my foot…now, I’m feeling great, but I really didn’t train enough to do the full or even the half really, since I started running again about 2 weeks ago and the most I’ve done is 10K. Thanks for being concerned 🙂
Thanks for the update! I knew your foot was hurting, but I know you were still thinking about the half, and I wanted to make sure you were still on the road to recovery… and no new major pains had come up!
Funny, one of my priorities is a trail too. I think it would be AWESOME to just walk outside and be on a trail. We have to drive to trails where we are now, meaning we hardly ever go to trails. I’m weird though because I also have a desire to live in a downtown city area. I can’t seem to make up my mind. I do INSIST that at Trader Joe’s be in the near vicinity. I’m quite sure I would be lost without Trader Joe’s.
We chose where we live because we love the town and the area surrounding it. Also it was close to boh our jobs (at the time) and had a nicely priced apartment complex. We liked it so much that we stayed when we bought our townhouse. Oh and it’s pretty much exactly halfway between her parents and my own.
Right now our basis for city choice is ANYWHERE but where we are now. Since M is in a profession that will bring in a larger portion of our household income, we’re searching for a city where he can find a great job.
That’s great! I LOVE that the neighborhood that our land is in has miles and miles of trails (they could be better maintained, but…) and we can walk for hours and feel like we’re all alone in the woods.
We picked our land because it’s where we can see ourselves living forever – we have 6 acres covered in a forest of pine trees and that’s exactly what we want. Also, the whole neighborhood is beautiful and people take really good care of their houses and yards. Our current house we picked because while we don’t see ourselves living here any longer than we have to, it’s practically the only street we found in Spokane (in this price range) where every single home owner takes care of their yard.
Ha, I am very excited to leave C-U. I don’t handle the weather well, the food and traffic suck, and I want to move someplace closer to the water. Since I grew up in VA, I’d prefer to move back to a coast soon. I think Harrison wants to check out Boston when we finish here–though who knows where we’ll find jobs….
